Connecting a Step Up Transformer
It would be a good idea to read the Bent Audio site which contains good information on this subject: http://www.bentaudio.com/parts/tx103loadhow.html1) The step-up ratio of the transformer will be important in determining the load the cartridge wi...
Anyone familiar with Hegeman/Morrison speakers
A friend of mine has a pair of the Morrison 1.5 speakers. I think they are at least 10 years old and probably more. I can't remember all the details of his system but I know he is driving them with a Citation II amp and uses a Counterpoint SA9 pho...
Anyone Using Gradient Loudspeaker?
Another speaker you may want to consider is the Morrison, either the model 23 or the 17. I have listened to the Gradients and the Morrisons (although not in the same room) and they both do very well near the wall. The Morrisons are also about the ...
reference 3a capo to l'integral nouveau
I used the DeCapos for a number of years and a friend of mine owned l'Integral. L'Integral is warmer and will produce significantly more bass than the DeCapo. However, it is double the price of the DeCapo and does not, in my opinion, represent nea...
Transparency: What speakers have it in spades?
Quads, particularly the original ESL 57. For me, these speakers are the definition of transparency. With the possible exception of the Soundlabs and the Beveridge (also both electrostatic), nothing comes close. Of course, I am biased.
Tube pre-amps $3500 under to add "warmth"
The Hovland HP100 would definitely satisfy the 'warmth' requirement. Very musical as well.
Is Audio Research SP-6 considered a good model?
There were so many versions of the SP-6, and not all of them were considered good, that it is really difficult to answer your question. If it is the original 6, it could definitely be improved with cap and resistor upgrades for probably not too mu...
Best bargain for speaker that can offer top sound
The original Quad 57 ESL.
Cizek Model II speakers ?
The audio dealer I worked at 30+ years ago carried them. Its been too long for me to remember too much about them but I do know they were not great sellers.
help for quad position
I have my Quads in a room about the same size as yours. I have mine placed on the short wall (firing down the length of the room), about 54" from the front wall (to the center of the speaker panel) and 22" to each side wall (to the nearest side pa...
Balanced SET? North Audio
Herman, my own opinion, based on speaking to Steve a number of times, there is a great deal of, ah, exageration in many of his claims. I was not impressed.
Balanced SET? North Audio
I know North Audio, have met Steve a number of times, heard some of his equipment and have been to his home/store. He is actually a service tech for an elevator company who eventually realized he could turn his expertise to designing and building ...
Anyone experienced with Coincident 300B?
Yes, I have heard them several times and on different speakers. They are quite nice amps, particularly for the price. You should be aware, however, that these amplifiers are made by ASL and are fancied up with better cosmetics and (reportedly) bet...
Dense, powerful sounding TT, decent top $3500 max?
See if you can find an Aries 1 - not the II or III. It is a substantial improvement on the HW19.
Ottawa, Ontario
Matthew,Thanks for a very entertaining and enjoyable evening. I thought the group's performance was great and I know that we all enjoyed this very much. Lets do this again early in the new year. Cheers, Terry.
