I have heard both also (at shows), and the 40.1's are the ones between the two that had me trying to figure a way to get them into my listening room. One of the nicest sounding/presenting speakers I've heard to date. Not neutral/uncolored, however...
Cary 120s
This amp is fantastic, if you get an octet of Gold Lions, and especially if you have the caps upgrade done. The SLP-05 sounds best with this amp, of ALL the Cary amps; and the 306Pro run balanced through the SLP-05 all the way to the 120S and into...
This is a silly hobby.
I just want to know how my proctologist does the exam with both hands on my shoulders...Hey, cabling is the one place where this hobby ISN'T silly, if you're buying used. With the market and my 401K so bouncy, my money is relatively safe in used c...
Cary SLP-05 vs Dodd Battery Pre
I take it then that you're not running the Cary balanced. It mates exceptionally well with the 120S, running balanced; OK with the 211 monos, and is a mess with the 805's, IMO. I think (no experience) the Dodd would be a better match with any SET ...
Have you turned your loved ones into audiophiles
I love those women at the audio shows. You know the ones. They sit there next to their man all Stepford like, pretending to be interested. ...Because its important to spend time together, and he's damn sure not going to join her for a pilates clas...
What were the best and worst rooms at RMAF 2009?
Hi Duane,Yup, broke my own rule. Had my audio cohort's WHT PR1 mkII's on my Frankenstein's at my house, and they sounded hideous in the nether regions; but in his room, with a 1/3 the cost Rocket 88? Magic. Setting up a room in a hotel, with nasty...
What were the best and worst rooms at RMAF 2009?
Hi Agear,Ya, and after their (Intuitive Design) no-show last year, I was really looking forward to it. Two years ago I was blown away by the sound with those monster water-cooled muthas. When I heard them this year however, I was underwhelmed, to ...
What were the best and worst rooms at RMAF 2009?
I was surprised how much I didn't like the Shelter Harmony. I've always thought that if one came up on Audiogon for half price I would jump on it. Glad now that it didn't come up.On the other hand, I got to hear the new Shelter 901 mkII. The origi...
What is it about the Cary SLI-80?
You guys are brutal! Its an analogy; not a lifestyle recommendation >Its not too speaker sensitive, and it has a switch for 4 or 8 ohms, and not the usual extra binding post. I think though, that if using it at 4 ohms, I would stick to monitors...
What is it about the Cary SLI-80?
I answered Charles by email; but thought I'd answer the thread also. To continue the drug analogy, the SLI-80 is like snorting. The Frankensteins are like breaking out the pipe.
Looking For Neutral Tube Amp Recommendation
The Lamms are always at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest. Go have a listen. Beware though. The 3.0's are out, and they are definitely out of your budget!
after 15 yrs w/the same setup it's upgrade time
If you don't run a lot of other stuff through your preamp, or need a home theater bypass, have you considered going with a Steelhead MKII? I've had one for a year now, and will NEVER go back to a linestage with all those wasted taps. The one line ...
How to apply DensoDamp to Michell Gyro SE?
You're going to like it. Thin layer tapering up the sides. Use your fingers to press into the edges. Keep a bowl of water on the table, and keep your fingers wet. Look at the pic that came with it. Use ALL the stuff. If you run out, you can go bac...
What is it about the Cary SLI-80?
The Cary SLI-80 is a gateway drug. Proceed with caution. I had one with all the F1 upgrades and a set of upgrade tubes from Upscale. Heck, the HEADPHONE AMP was almost worth the price of admission...I ran it with the 306 SACD into Triangle Celius'...
Best cart for a Michell Gyro SE/Tecnoarm combo?
I went from a Shelter 501 II to a 901. Both have good synergy. I'm running it through the MM side of a Steelhead with very good result. I have the HR power supply though; and this gets you right straight out of the "somethings missing" feeling, an...
