Your most disappointing purchase or audition?

I've had a few.

bought a Naim Nait 3. Loved it in the store. Returned it within a week- way forward at home

Brought home some CJ preamp to audition perhaps 22 years ago. Noisy as anything and a turn off transient destroyed a tweeter (though years later i bought a CJ 17LS2 which I thought was the finest preamp I ever heard in my home)

Auditioned a VPI table (HW19) in a store- the store just could not get the belt to stay on. Bought a Rega instead. This was in perhaps 1990.

Fortunately, I never really experienced buyers remorse say 6 months or more after settling on a piece of gear.

Finally, there have been too many speakers that got stellar write ups which I just didn't care for.

Definitely the pair of Infinity Renaissance 90's I bought from A'gon member
Lschwartz. He described them as being in excellent condition, so after
some discussion I went ahead and had them crated and shipped to
Australia. On arrival I found 'textor' repairs covering up dings, and one grill
(which is integral to the design of the R90 like Avalon) had a damaged peg
and damaged/discoloured cloth. The damaged peg meant the grill hung
away from the speaker ruining the imaging. I then contacted LSchwartz
who suggested I buy a replacement grill from his friend who was selling a
"NOS" example on Ebay (probably the original grill). I tried twice to buy the
grill from this guy who twice cancelled my 'buy now' option. The seller then
stuffed me around for weeks just to give me false hope. In the end I sold
the speakers at a heavy loss. Lschwartz sold me a lemon, lied about the
description in his ad & completely denied any damage to the grill. He
should be avoided at all costs!
Thanks for your f'back Roxy, however this occurred several years ago & therefore would not be appropriate for that forum, but I take your point.

wow!, welcome back to audiogon Melbguy1, good to see you ole chap, I hope things are better for you now, if you like, you may e-mail me through audiogon and catch up on things, cheers.
Cheers AL, thanks for your welcome back. Yes it's been a while. I have been discovering to my dismay how other forums are run as oligopolies, whilst correspondingly allowing various forms of neurosis and personality disorders to flourish. By comparison, coming back to Audiogon has been a breath of fresh air. Yeah i'll buzz you via the AG system soon to catch up on things.

Mel,
I take your point as well...those incidents are frustrating and can stay with you for a long while. It has happened to me as well.
Thanks for your f'back Roxy. It's good to know in a sense you're not alone and that this kind of thing has happened to others.
Charles1dad, belly aching and soliciting other members for sympathy with
your laughable version of events is not going to change the fact you
fragrantly breached Audiogon's TOS. And the fact the Admins acted so
promptly proves this. For the benefit of other members, I re-posted your
offending post below. My advice is suck it up mate and move on.

Usermanual,
Your comments and disposition are the epitome of immaturity. You insult
anyone who disagrees with your childish defensive behavior and narrow
viewpoints. You're right and everyone else with alternative perspective is
wrong. The persistent and redundant need to wave the Magico flag is
overtly pathetic. People here are mature adults and can accept contrary
points of view, that's simply life. People here accept your choice of Magico,
yet you can't find it in you to return the same degree of common respect.
We're only discussing audio speakers and yes it's absolutely a subjective
undertaking(you"listen" and decide). Usermanuel some
listeners do find your beloved Magico to be the Subaru(or worse) in your
chosen analogy. You seem to have much self esteem invested in this Brand
ownership. This fragility is actually glaringly sad. All of this from you over
mere speakers?
Tboooe, there is no excuse for such depraved personal remarks toward
another member, unless of course you are suggesting Charles1dad is
exempt from Audiogon's Terms of Use?
@Acman, am I missing something? You're saying it's ok for Charles1dad to post lies about his and others participation in that thread, then advise other members who participated in that thread (including the member who reported the offending post) to post a rebuttal in the original thread. And members will connect the dots how?.... Then you stand on your soap box and advise "ALL" participants to "be embarrassed". Yuh.

@Roxy, glad to see you condone such comments. That sais a lot about your character.
Shakey, fragile eh? Label me as you wish. If I'm so wrong, why are Charles1dad's posts being moderated? The fact is one of us is in the and one of us is in the wrong. And the forum admins have come to a judgment of that. Oh, and I intend on posting regularly on this forum.

It's disturbing to watch a public meltdown.
Yes amen Drubin, get rid of the trolls & lets get back to friendly discussion on this hobby!
Charles, thanks for the character reference. Funny, I thought running a blacklist, then promoting that fact was incredibly rude and arrogant. Different points of view my friend. Btw, I find your description of my comments as "pugnacious" ironic. Why don't you take a good look in the mirror once in a while.

To your comment accusing me of comparing my system to Brownsfan, you either completely misread my comment or are trolling here. Your literal translation and dissection of my comments displays impressive erudition, but you get a fail on context. I'll leave you to your power plays, they bore me to be honest.
Browns, it's kind of anal running a black list, isn't it? Anyhow looking at your system, I doubt you could afford to buy any gear from those members anyway and vice versa, I doubt those members would want to buy any of your gear apropos of which I might check out the classified section..
@Audiolabyrinth, I have no interest in kissing up to Charles1dad. Best he keep to his side of the forum, and me to mine. And that's all i'm going to say on that subject. That said, in the interests of harmony, I will bite my tongue from now on.
08-26-14: Syntax
Magico Q5 (dead, lifeless, thin, analytic and far away from a reproduction of a real sounding tone)
Going by your extensive equipment list, I'm guessing you are a Dealer or Distributor who does not represent Magico. In any case, you either have a commercial bias or some bone to pick with Magico, as if you were evaluating their products objectively you would know that Magico speakers by their nature are transparent, highly resolving & neutral in tonal balance and reflect the character of upstream gear. Syntax error?
Syntax, don't take my comments personally. I've heard the Q5's, yes they eat watts like a couple of Apogee Scintilla's on heat, but fed with a lot of warm, rich, clean power and they can really sing. They are very transparent to source, so rubbish in, rubbish out applies. I'm not saying they are perfect. I actually prefer my S5's in many respects, but I thought your comments were a little uncharitable. If they were directed at the Q5's sensitivity, i'd would not and agree with you though..
I've heard the Magico S5's with Boulder, Soulution, Audia Flight Strumento, Dartzeel and Vitus Reference and Signature Series. The best sound I heard was with Vitus Signature Series amps & previous model Vitus SCD-010 front end. The sound was very smooth, pure, liquid/tube-like, analogue sounding and involving. In a word, musical. Hence why i'm going for Vitus Sig series gear. Having heard a wide range of amps with the S5's, I can easily see why many people would walk away unimpressed, whist others really like them. It's a bit like the philosopher's stone.
