@thoft did you do anything with your 3.5 on the outsides or was it just driver replacement. I really don’t want to have to reveneer speakers if it’s a light stain, but I’m thinking a little sanding will be needed, carefully.

Has anyone ever had any problems with the lighter veneer on their Thiels? Mainly referring to a cup stain or something else and then tried to get it out by light sanding etc. @thoft did you do anything with your 3.5 on the outsides or was it just driver replacement. Hi Guys, great thread. I’m now the owner of CS1.2, 2.2 and just picked up a set of 3.5 (5815,5816 sn#)which I’ve been after for a while. My question is finishes that were offered on these. When I went to look at these, my first thought was someone over the years stained these and that they were the original light color model. Rob @coherent said they looked like the Teak finish. Hope you can see from the links and zoom in. Thanks in advance. https://drive.google.com/file/d/13XIPQzG687UGth47H5rctJ_AAks6jwG4/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AiVcrFr-DUa0DeCUslS3oriBgp07p8A-/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1h9SEyM2ck1vOepi8LPUySlw8lZkEaPln/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1e-p1hdOUow6tIfnzdgajE97PFS7R7BSk/view?usp=sharing |
Thanks @tomthiel and @thielrules. My first thoughts they were the lighter color that Thiel offered then they stained this color. They don’t feel like they have been sanded and you can see on the edges where the runoff was. I guess once I get them sanded down carefully, I’ll be able to see what’s underneath. |
@thoft This is the unit Rob is selling at Coherent for 250.00 ea. Although still expensive at 190.00 ea, it’s what is recommended from Rob as being the closest match to original. https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/approx-5-midrange/scan-speak-13m-midrange-replacement-speaker/ Check out the Thiel section, there is another driver they suggest, but I’m not sure how much of a difference it would make https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/speaker-replacement |
Hey guys, I thought about rotating my CS3.5 woofers a 180 degrees since they will be going into storage for a little while, and it’s probably never been done. I have the screws out but cannot get that thing to break loose, any hints? My CS2.2 had little trim rings, but these I can’t tell. @tomthiel , any recollection on these? thanks in advance |
Wow @sdecker , great find! |
Hello all, picked up my fourth set of Thiel, a pair of CS 2 3 with upgraded tweeters from what I can tell from a previous receipt with Rob @coherent. Unfortunately the serial numbers are gone on these, but they are in excellent shape with exception of a few spots on the grills. This leads me to my next question, has anyone redone the grill fabric on this newer style that has excess material to compensate for the larger baffle area? Also own the 3.5 w/eq, CS 2 2 and 1.2 - thanks in advance

@duramax747 - Wow those look nice. I guess my top choice out of the three models I have would be the 2.2, then 1.2, then 3.5. I’ll keep a eye on this forum like I usually do to see updates from your posts. For now, count me in for a 2.2 set if you get other interests for that model. I’m not sure if you’ll get many more for the 1.2 or 3.5. Thanks! |
Wow @dhoff01 , care to share a pic of those? I wonder how many of the Les Paul versions were made? |
