Peter Gabriel....Bad sounding CD's......groan.....

Hello all
I'm a big Peter Gabriel fan and own all his cd's. Aside from his latest release UP, all his cd's sound horrible. Thin, bright, digital, and lifeless. Does anyone know if DCC, MFSL, or any other company that specialized in remastering recordings worked on his stuff? I noticed some of his cd's in the music store now sport the 'digitally remasterd' logo. Are they that much better then the 'older' releases? Also I see he has just released a Greatest Hits cd, are those songs remastered and improved?. Please do not recommend analog records as that is not an option for me right now.
Thanks in advance guys

The remastered cds are a big step up from the original cds, the SACDs...if you have already upgraded to the remastered CDs are a smaller step though still worthwile in my opinion
I also am a big fan of Gabriel and your right some of the recordings are awful. The first cut on "UP" will blow you out of your seat with brightness. The Lp's are much better. If you can find the older genesis albums( Selling England... or Foxtrot) you will be amazed at how good he sounds especially the Japanese pressings
I also have a copy of the LP of "So". It sounds all right, but not analog in the best sense of the word. It does not say whether the original master was digital or analog, but PG's albums sound like they may have been stuck in the dark ages of digital mastering. Too Bad, great music.
Check out the Hi-Fi+ issue from a couple months ago where Peetah was on the cover. There was a lot of info in it comparing the recording quality of the various formats.
All Peter Gabriel titles were released in Germany (from the Nimbus plant) a year before being released in the U.S. Those German versions have been the best cd versions to this day. I find the remasters to have lost punch and emotion in order to eliminate hiss. (The same thing happenned to the Cat Stevens remasters). The sacd version's are better (I have them all) but for CD the German's are IT.
I had the originals...have a couple remastereds...and a couple SACD's...each step up was definitely an appreciable difference...enjoy.

Have you tried his original LP's. They're not much better. Especially "So". There's sibilence in the recording. Tried this on several different systems with the same result. Either bad mastering or bad pressings (and I've tried several). Good music though - just suitable for the walkman and not the main system.

Enjoy,
Bob
Favorite Peter Gabriel CDs anyone?

I like stuff on the fringe, King Crimson, Portishead etc... and wonder what Gabriel stuff may compare.

thanks

I am not quite sure what your point of reference is, but ... the Peter Gabriel's catalog was extensively remastered a year or so ago and the remastered CDs were quite an improvement over the original CDs.

Check out the following thread, where we discussed the Gabriel remasters here on Agon ... http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?gmusi&1023807331.

Hope this helps.

Dudeaudio-a search sound throw up the info you require.
All the Gabriel CD's were remastered this year-released twice once as CD's and then a few months later as SACD's.
They sound a lot better than the original CD's.
If you do not have a SACD player yet grt one! PG has has released a lot of his work on SACD and the GH before the new one is fantastic! SACD 2 channel is the way to go.
