Help determining what piece of gear I need for a friends set up.

Hello everyone.  I came here to post because I am completely out of my depth on something.  I work in IT by trade and know a bit about high end audio equipment.

However, an older friend of mine has asked how to make something kind of strange work and I do not want to hand out bad advice.

He has a McIntosh MA5300 and wants an old school style spectrum analyzer connected to it.  Almost no one makes these anymore and he found one from BDS and purchased it.

He is wanted to use two RCA Y Cables to split the pre out coming out of the Mcintosh and loop one back into the amplifier in.  The other connection has has run to the BDS unit.  However, even at max sensitivity settings the spectrum analyzer doesn't pick anything up until you have the volume on the Mcintosh unit at 45% or above.

He wants to put something in between the McIntosh and the BDS unit to boost the signal/volume of the signal going into the BDS unit.  I know in theory you could use a headphone amplifier, but I do not know if this could damage the McIntosh unit in some way or cause any other problems.

What is the proper way to accomplish this?

Thank you all for any advice and input.

That exact one was actually my first instinct.  I was concerned with it being so cheap and suggesting he connect it to such an expensive piece of equipment.

Thank you for confirming my theory!
