External CD burner?

For burning high quality audio CD's, is there any merit in a dedicated external (firewire or usb) cd burner, or is a built-in DVD burner no different?

I've been disappointed in the results I get burning a CD on my Mac. They just don't sound as good as the original. Is it the burner? If so, what should I get?
