About Lugnut -- Patrick Malone

Many of us have come to know Patrick Malone (Lugnut) as a friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and kind individual. He is a frequent and enthusiastic contributor to our analog discussion forum. He has initiated only 17 threads, but responded to 559 threads. I would guess that many, if not most, of us can recall a time when Pat replied with helpful advice to a question we posted or helped us track down a rare recording. I have come to love Pat as a friend, and to respect him as a man, and I suspect many of you share those feelings.

Today I write to share difficult news with you. Pat has been diagnosed with an aggressive stomach cancer. It has yet to be determined whether surgery will even be worth it. If surgery is performed, most or all of the stomach will be removed, and Pat would face a difficult and long post-op period in the hospital. The medical course is still uncertain, but will be determined soon. Whatever is decided, it will not be easy or pleasant.

Something may be planned in the future to assist the family. For now, Pat could use some of the friendship he so often and willingly showed us. You can email Pat at: [email protected]. You can also mail cards, letters ... or whatever. You may email me for Pat's mailing address. My email is: [email protected].

I hope to spend a few days with Pat in Idaho or Nebraska (from which he hails) soon. Between this news, my legal work, getting ready for family arriving for the holidays, Audio Intelligent, and trying to make plans to visit Pat, my head is spinning. If you email me and I don't respond, please understand that I am not ignoring you, but rather simply do not have time to reply.

Pat may or may not have time to respond to posts here, to emails, or to cards mailed to him. But he has asked me to convey to each and every one of you that he has cherished your friendship, your comradery, and sharing our common hobby on this great website.

As we prepare for our holiday season celebrations, and look forward to -- as we should -- enjoying this time of year, I ask that you keep Pat and his family in mind ... and softly offer up, in quiet moments in the still of night and early morning, prayers for Pat and his family. God bless.

Warmest regards to all,
Paul Frumkin

Not the kind of news any of us want to hear about Lugnut.

Pat and I have exchanged emails and posts since he first arrived at Audiogon. I consider him a friend as well as an important part of our community.

I hope his spirited behavior can translate into perseverance to fight this attack on his body. I believe his strength and conviction will serve him in this tough time and I will have him in my prayers.
I'm looking forward to meeting you in person Lugnut, I have the last of that old special Cognac hidden under the counter so my Tuesday night music guests don't drink it before you get here.

Nrchy, how about you coming that same weekend and we will make a party of it. I might even give you an LP or two as a bribe.
Lugnut, I attended the Stereo Times awards party in NYC, honoring Paul Frumkin. Audiogon plans to post my images covering the event so we can all congratulate him.

I am really looking forward to the visit from you and Vetterone, I have a great Mexican food place picked out and hope will be a great experience for you guys.
Audiogon has my processed images of the New York Stereophile show and Paul Frunkin's award ceremony as of this morning. The photo's should appear under "show coverage" this week, once they have sorted them all out.

I must announce to everyone at Audiogon:
Paul don't need no stinkin' award, he has the MOST beautiful wife imaginable. Pooey on the award, stay home and enjoy your time with HER.

Seriously, congrats on the award. Great party with dozens of high end people and crazy "dance floor lighting" that I captured in my images for all to see.

Pat, I too can hardly wait.

Once you come to Dallas, we are going to move at whatever speed suits you . I have at least three of my listening group guys ready to receive us so you can sample several systems, depending on your mood.
As everyone can tell from Lugnut's post, we had a blast.

I had never met any of these guys face to face except for Nate (Nrchy), who visited me about a year ago. When I told Nate that he and Larry would be welcome to come celebrate, they both jumped at the chance.

Riding around in my GMC with Pat (Lugnut), Nate (Nrchy), Steve (Vetterone) and Larry (Cello), was like revisiting with old friends at a high school reunion. People that you really cared about but had not seen in 20 years. Now you are back together, surprised, grateful and laughing about old times.

It's uncanny how similar all of us responded to each other regardless of the topic, and we spoke of many things. All these guys brought experiences that were shared around the dinner table and during the many car trips in search of LP's.

I think everyone found at least one album they had been looking for and it was a blast coming back to my home and spinning them in my system. Cello got a "Men At Work" for $3.98 that was absolutely like new. Amazing how good it sounded for a pop record.

Pat is an amazing guy, the kind of guy you want to be friends with for life. Courteous, thoughtful and reserved, with a sense of humor as twisted as mine. I am happy we shared this time and music. High end audio is as always, the only venture in my life where I met the BEST people.

Even my wife and I are together because of music, she was helping out at a radio station where my friend, who was the DJ, allowed me access to the control room, where we spoke while the LP's were spinning.

Love of music is an amazing venture and never ceases to amaze and entertain me, as well as providing me with people who change my life and make it more worthwhile.
Sure, maybe a heart attack or fatal stroke would be easier to endure but remember that you won't have the time to make things right if that is how God chooses to take you home.

Maybe God gives extra time to those he is calling when they are needed to bring about a change in those who are watching and listening?

Seems that's the case for both Lance and Lugnut.
Nrchy, the reason Pat wore that hat in Dallas was because I was the one driving.
Pat (quoting you)

One thing for sure, of all the fine folks I've met personally here at Audiogon I think I'm most like Albert. I bothers me NOT if a record is less than audiophile grade IF the music moves me. I demand my system to allow me to enjoy the music I love. When Bill Dillon was over and we listened to NY's Greatest Hits he remarked how listening catapults us to a different time and place. My brother called recently and he remarked how much he doesn't like music videos because it ruins the connection the mind makes with where you were when you first heard a song. I agree with him 100%. It's too bad I'm not more like Albert. If I were I'd have about a zillion tubes to roll and my system would have a dead silent background too. But then I'd also tell many really bad jokes too. As if that's a bad

That's one of the biggest compliments ever. Being compared to Lugnut and his love of music and praise of my system at the same time.

I wish I had the money to fly you back to Dallas to listen again, I have the new CSN&Y 45 RPM's and the new Neil Young releases from Classic Records. They are absolutely stunning !

Last week we played them all the way through and no one said a word. Wish you were here.
Pat, one request.

Even if your feeling on top of the world, please don't post any images of you dressed only in your aviator hat and "birthday" suit.
I'm jealous. Since meeting Pat here on my turf, I wish I had the budget to tag along on the California leg of this journey.

Nice weather, pretty sites, shopping for music and Lugnut's humor. I guarantee you guys will enjoy yourselves.
Pat may retread but he will never retire, right Pat?

I am happy for you. I've been to SF many times and it is a beautiful city with much to offer and (generally) excellent weather.

I wish I could have joined, although it's probably better I didn't go, what with Pat and I fighting over all those LP's. The images I saw looked like I missed some great sound systems and beautiful homes.

My sincere thanks to you guys for making Pat and Barb feel at home.
Pat, web link to a mint copy of Neil Young "Unplugged" is in your email box. Hope it's as clean as my copy, a wonderful piece of music.
Nrchy, That’s why I didn't post the link here at Audiogon. You would have bought it for yourself wouldn't you :^).

Then again, you prefer Steak Sandwiches to Cheeseburgers don't you.

Which reminds me, when are you going to cook me up a Cheeseburger (with fries and a malt) from that restaurant of yours?
Patrick Elowishis, alias Lugnut, alias Pat Malone, alias part that holds wheel on.

It might not be better living through chemistry, but if it gets you well enough to party with us again at the Porter house, you and the previous gang, TWL and Barb are all welcome.

I am sincerely grateful for the time we spent at RMAF in Denver. That is the first time I had a chance to meet Barb in person. I would wish for angels to watch over you but I believe she beat me to it by standing up for you.

I love you my friend and hope you get better. I may call that doctor yet and give him a thrashing
Holy shit Bin, that had almost too much meaning for me. I hope you continue to post on all kinds of topics. Thank you for pointing out how important love is to those left alone in the end.

I think we need to remember where Barb is on this. When I hugged Pat good by at RMAF as we were all parting for the airport I caught a glimpse of Barbs face. She read me and I read her and both of us had to turn away.

Pat has an angel looking over him but I fear this angel will have the biggest broken heart on earth when Pat passes before her. Perhaps her pain will be worse except for the knowledge of how much her husband loves and worships her.

I really wish I could do something worthwhile.
Pat,

I got your email, thank you. I wish I had some words of wisdom to impart to you but your so far ahead of me, I won't try.

Tell Barb I said "Happy Birthday." As a gift, perhaps she could be the "dancing girls" of your dreams in your own private party. That should motivate you enough to let your friends at Audiogon how your doing.

Wish I could be there to lend a hand, I'll call again soon. Hopefully my timing will be better next time. As always, I feel worthless, wish I could do something really good for you.
Thank you Barb for taking time to speak with me on the phone and special thanks to Pat for struggling to reach the phone and give me the soft, attentive "Well hello Albert" I longed to hear.

His voice was so soft and frail it brought me to tears, as I've said many times before, I just feel worthless. I'm the kind of guy that is never afraid of any task before me, old school roll up my sleeves and DO IT.

Well, Pat puts me to shame, I can't do for him what I would like and he faces a situation that I cannot really grasp. He is lucky to have the love of Barb and his daughter and I can only dream of having Pat's strength, dignity, class and compassion when my time runs out.

Bless all you Audiogon guys and girls for showing the best side of humanity and love. It's our love of music that brings us together but it now is obvious there is also something deeper in hearts that bind us together. I am proud of Pat for showing us the way.
Pat, I miss you, but grateful your suffering is over. It's hard for me and the others left behind that knew and loved you.

There never seems to be enough love to go around. Your were the exception. You opened your heart and shared yourself, creating more love than you took.

I will never forget the time we spent together, you enriched my life, made me laugh and filled me with joy.

No replacement for Lugnut, one of a kind, an original, a loving spirit with affection for family and friends that loved music and the joy and passion it brought into his life.

Thank you for being you, for being so honest and for being so true.
I just spoke to Barb, great to hear her voice again. She had visitors to comfort her so I kept my conversation short.

I am grateful to all at Audiogon who supported this family when they needed it and grateful that I was able to share in the joy of knowing Pat and Barb.
Thank you for sharing those Barb, that photo of you and Pat says everything about your long loving relationship.
Merry Christmas, Barb. I sent you a card but wanted to tell you here too.

Thank you for the photo's, their on our mantle.
Congratulations Ben, that's a wonderful gesture and a very fine name.

I hope your baby boy is blessed with your love of music and your sense of honor and good nature.
Nate, do you remember what a kick Pat got out of seeing all the birds and squirrels that live in my front yard?

Pat literally laughed out loud when he saw I could call Squirrel girl down from tree to retrieve a slice of bread. I know, it's silly amusement, but better than much of what passes for entertainment on TV these days :^).
I miss Pat too.

Vetterone (Steve) and I were talking about Pat the other day. Seems that the best are always taken too soon.
The animals in my yard miss Lugnut feeding them while Cello, Vetterone and Nrchy were sitting on my sofa, listening to music.

I can still hear Pat's laugh as he watched. A kind soul with a big heart, I think of him often.
