AES/EBU vs XLR cables for digital connection
@blisshifi    I wouldn't worry much about the digital source clock too much.  Usually the embedded clock in the sourrce would get extracted and stabilised, either with a PLL or some other secret sauce methods.   I don't think the results would...
AES/EBU vs XLR cables for digital connection
The impedance matching is more for technical aspect of designing. The common analog XLR will still work, but may not sound as good.   The importance of impedance matching is to reduce signal reflections from both ends and would generate distorti...
Which DACs are known to be sweet/rich/relaxed?
@robert1976   If by now you’re still thinking of getting rid of that Mola Mola DAC, please send it down across the causeway where I live. HAHAHAHAHA   Anyway, just this 11.11 sales, I bought a cheap China brand DAC (about USD500), runs on dual...
Denafrips Ares ii
Honestly if such comment is true, then all low end dacs compared to higher end dacs are damaged, and higher end system are problematic. Hahahaha   On a serious note, for the money of the Ares II, personally, I’ll be willing give this one a shot ...
Denafrips Ares ii
Contrary to the many people here, I don't like the SQ of Ares II.   I had one loan home and it sounded nasal and compressed vs my McIntosh C47.   Best input is via USB.  I encountered some buggy signal dropout using coax, need to toggle the in...
Upsampling, Can there be too much?
Well, in the past (around late '80s) we do have 8x oversampling CD players.  That means we are very accustomed to 16bit 352.8KHz sound signatures.   Personally I tested myself on a headphone, anything more than 24/176.4 makes no difference to me...
Looking for a DAC that's better than Mc C47
Hello guys, after some research, looks like I need to pump up my budget by quite a lot to get the sound sig I'm looking for. Anyone can comment on the Yggy OG vs MHDT Pagoda Balance?  If there's an option for XLR connection, I'm more keen on that...
Looking for a DAC that's better than Mc C47
Thank you guys.   Looks like Mytek Liberty 2, Schiit Gungnir and MHDT Pagoda are more in line with my budget.  Will dig more info and reviews into these 3 models as I have no demo here.  The rest AR, Berkeley and Musetec are out of range.   Fo...
Looking for a DAC that's better than Mc C47
Thank you guys for the recommendations.  Where I stay, there's no seller for Mytek, Berkeley and AR.  But I'll research on them and see if I can buy online based on blind faith.  Hahahaha   Bricasti is way off my budget chart.   @audiotroy  T...
Isn't it really about quality of recording?
Contrary, I'd say the content is more important than the recording quality.   So you like Elvis, and the recording quality back then was limited by the type of equipment used in the 50s/60s.  No matter what fancy digital mastering techniques, th...
Which DACs are known to be sweet/rich/relaxed?
Hi Robert, how did you conclude that it is the DAC problem?  Might be the amp and speakers being too revealing like what chayro said.   Perhaps a Conrad Johnson or Acoustic Research tube preamp would be enough to "flatten the curve", so to speak...
CD transports; do they really matter
@majorc   [Any thoughts regarding playing ripped CDs from a hard drive and how that compares to different levels of transports?]   Glad you asked.   A good well built ROM drive will yield better rips. And also store those rips into SSD inst...
CD transports; do they really matter
@ghdprentice 1,720 posts       [Yes, you are correct. However, high end equipment will incorporate transports in heavy dampening structures to reduce vibration, feed the exceptionally clean power, isolate from electronic noice and ge...
CD transports; do they really matter
@majorc    Can you tell us the brands and models of those transport you've tested?  Also did you test them on the same equipment like A/B test?
CD transports; do they really matter
Genuine question for audio-union:   [I distribute CEC. Jitter is going to be the lowest with a belt drive transport. The noise level will be lower with a belt drive because the motor is farther away from the noise sensitive laser head. Suspens...
