Do Mono Block amps provide better sound ??
I suspect that part of the answer lies in the consideration of the amount of power available to provide transient dynamic range and also damping to control the speaker excursion to avoid spurious distortion. The separate power supply in each monob...
tube recommendation please
IMO the Mullards are hard to beat. Telefunken are also quite good and I agree w/ Reynolds853 in regards to neutrality. Brimar/Amperex bugleboy have been good for me also but it's been a while since I've used them and memory can't always be relied ...
Budget receiver/integrated amp for Cornwall III's?
I've got the DCM TF-600, and they have great synergy with the Harman Kardon 330c , and also the Pioneer sx-770 receivers. The Luxman r-103 is truly amazing with these speakers.
Vinyl lovers I must be crazy
Bought my first Turntable in 1982. Wished there was a format that had zero surface-noise, because the pops and clicks were so distracting. JUMPED into cd format without regret until last year when I impulse purchased a Dual 1264 I found on Craigs ...
Fisher SA-300-B
I have a Dynaco ST-70 and the Large Advents. Plenty of power to drive them to ear-splitting levels in my 18'x 20' room. My st-70 is pretty much stock except for black gate bypass caps which were in there when I got the amp. I find it quite enjoyab...
Fisher SA300 biasing
I would recommend finding an electronics-tech in your area. I am certainly no expert in re: to tube electronics, but it sounds like an oscilloscope would be the most accurate way to take readings. Guitar tube amps often have a hum balance pot whi...
nakamichi cassette deck mr - 1
It may need a belt/belts. Most common problem I've seen with old cassette decks.
Which attributes do you value most?
The "PRaT" acronym is new to me and seems to be a valuable descriptor for a large part of what I value in music reproduction.Without this,I find a system and in many cases a recording to be less than engaging. Soundstaging is quite a fascinating p...
Marantz SC-7S2 solid state preamp- how good is it?
Hooper characterized the sound of the Marantz system as sublime-precisely the word a friend used to describe it a couple of days ago. I don't know what speakers you are using, but with the Dynaudio's (which some refer to as "clinical- sounding") ...
Marantz SC-7S2 solid state preamp- how good is it?
I've only heard about 8 hrs of music on a new one that may not be broken in yet- 4 of those using a Carver power amp (tfm-15cb),the other four hours with the Ma-9s2 monoblocks. So far (admittedly, not very) It has been noticeable mainly by it's abs...
Dynaudio Special One-Anyone heard/own these?
I had an opportunity to try the Dynaudio's with a friends system using the Marantz Ma-9s2 monoblocks.WOW!(his amps only have a couple of hours on them so they aren't even settled in yet) You guys are absolutely dead-on in re: more and higher quali...
Dynaudio Special One-Anyone heard/own these?
Thanks guys, I'm going to look into the Pass and the McCormack.
Dynaudio Special One-Anyone heard/own these?
Thanks, Mechans. I tried my Dynaco St-70 (modded) and the cage got really hot. (I confirmed the bias-and made sure I hooked up to the 4Ωtaps) I think I may try running the Carver bridged to mono with just one speaker and see if that gets better re...
How is Mid Fi defined?
Yesterdays/yesteryears Hi-fi.When you can buy it for 10% of it's original price tag and still really enjoy it. *I would also define it as audio gear that is two tiers down from higher-fi. *It's a special spouse-friendly euphemism for any piece of ...
For crying out loud
I've found this to be true for my Harman Kardon cd player also. I'm burning in a Marantz sa-7s1 super-audio player for a friend (I DO feel lucky!) and I can't discern a difference yet,but It's quite possible that something else in my system is not...
