Bach suites for solo cello-best Tidal or Qobuz recording?
I agree with @mike_in_nc :There are various schools of performance, ranging from quite HIP (historically influenced performance) to romantic. While I may listen to different recordings for different purposes, my personal favorite is Yo-Yo Ma’s com...
Why Don't More People Into Music Reproduction At Home Play Around With Musical Instruments
Most of the time five figures will buy a very nice instrument. Only professionals need instruments that are more expensive. Even the cheapest violins in the “Big Five” orchestras (plus LA, STL, etc.) will be six figures. The Messiah Strad, possibl...

Why Don't More People Into Music Reproduction At Home Play Around With Musical Instruments
I agree with your premise that there is a lot to be gained by playing musical instruments. I think that the two reasons why more people don’t play instruments are the time and money needed. “Playing around” with an instrument is completely differe...

some old headphones I loved, what is similar now?
For $150, I have had a good experience with the Sennheiser HD 569 headphones. While not on the same level as the Sennheiser HD 650 or HD 820, they sound very good for the price. I bought my headphones new for $150, and bought a used iFi DAC for $5...
Gaining listening experience without spending money
You can start off by buying used components. This allows you to affordably find what you like. Later you can buy new components or higher quality used components. Of course, Audiogon is a great place to do this.

If you’re interested in classical music, start a 30-day trial of the Berlin Philharmonic Digital Concert Hall. It is fascinating to see and hear a piece performed once in 2010, and again with a different conductor in 2017. You may not gain experie...

A Sonos Move or a pair of Sonos 1's
My understanding is that the refurbished Play:1s are the most recent model and will be compatible with the new S2 system. If you want better sound than that in a stationary setup, I would get two Play:5s.
A Sonos Move or a pair of Sonos 1's
I would go with the Play:1s to get a true stereo pair. The extra cost of the Move goes towards features that are only helpful if you plan to use it as a portable speaker, with the exception being Bluetooth support. I haven’t heard the Move, but I ...
Vivaldi, played badly, is the worst classical music on earth
@stringreen I disagree with your statement that the Suzuki method “thwarts musicality”. First, a famous pianist (I think it was Rubinstein) said that “the music happens between the notes”. A piano is different than a violin. With a piano, you can ...
Vivaldi, played badly, is the worst classical music on earth
@flipwils11I have spent many hours practicing that piece! I have studied violin with the Suzuki method for ~8 years now, and have learned a few pieces past book 4 (as my username suggests). Did you study with the Suzuki method? How did you find ou...
