Surround Channel Speaker Recommendations
I'll take some exeption to the previous post...I use Atlantic Tech 454 surrounds with my Thiel 2.3/MCS1 system, and while the timbre match isn't perfect, I still get a very satisfying HT experience. Sure, I'd like to have Powerpoints some day, but...
Using RCA & XLR connections at same time on Amp
I did almost exactly what you describe with a Bryston power amp and a Resolution Audio CD-55 player (which does have XLR outputs and an analog volume control). Works like a champ, as long as you can easily reach around to the back of the amp to sw...

Ultraviolet - my MP3s at 320 kbps run a little over 2 MB/min in file size, so they are considerably smaller than an uncompressed file.I'd suggest looking at Wes Phillips review of the iPod in last month's Stereophile. In his listening tests, he re...
Calling all Proceed AVP 2 owners..please advise
I'd like to think we'll see more trickle down from the No. 40, but with Harmon dropping the Proceed line, I'd be awfully surprised if we see any more upgrades to the AVP. Too bad...it's a great unit.

Ultraviolet - what bit rate are you using to rip your MP3s? I've ripped most of my disks at 320 kbps, and have been pretty happy with the results for background listening.
Personal Preamp Evolution
1976 - Dynaco PAT-4: a great starter pre-amp (used initially just with a pair of Koss Pro 4AA headphones), but suffered from the "Dynaco hum".1977 - Phase Linear 4000: one heck of a piece if gear for a college freshman! I scrimped and saved all su...
Personal speaker evolution
1) 1975 - Janzen's with electrostatic tweeters (6-month loan from a friend of my parents, no way could I afford something like this, but the bug bit me hard!)2) 1977 - Pioneer R-700. Big, impressive looking midrange horn and a tweeter that never s...

Leftistelf - I use the noise isolation 'phones riding the Metro here in DC, not driving...makes for a sweet ride!
CDP"s with digital input ?
I used to own the CD55 (great CDP), but it does not have a digital input. The Mark Levinson No. 39 and No. 390 do, however.
Good Jazz/Vocal Reference CD Recommendations?
Concur with the suggestions above, and would also add some of Diana Krall's CDs, such as "Steppin' Out" and "The Look of Love". Some great turn-out-the-lights-and-u-r-there whisky sippin' music.
Feel vs. Think - take an objective look...
Are you by chance drawing a comparison to the Myers-Briggs personality tests? FWIW, I'm ENTP. And I think that's pretty accurate....
Who will survive? One last table til I die.
A Linn LP-12, of course! It's lasted two decades, and will probably last another two, if only out of pure, scottish stubborness!
Best Analog pass-through on DSP Theater Pre/Pros?`
The Proceed AVP has an excellent analog pass-through.
opinions on linn classic
The Classik is a great small-room solution. Be advised the earlier versions did not have a tuner section, which you really ought to have if you listen to FM at all. It even has a timer function so you can use it as an alarm clock!Highly recommended!
