How long should vinyl last?
My experience is similar to Jependlton's: I've got scores of LPs that I bought new in the 60's and 70's that still sound great. I also recommend use of a wet-vac cleaning machine and a carbon fiber brush before *and* after each play.
Do I need a machine to clean ?
Phoutin - over the past few months on average I've been cleaning about 10 LPs per week. I last changed the vac-sweep pad about two months ago, and it's time again. So - - figure a pad lasts 75 cleanings or thereabouts. The pads come in packs of fo...
Do I need a machine to clean ?
Phoutin - the Nitty Gritty machine requires very little maintenance. Mine has an automatic fluid dispenser, but I don't use it. I keep a plastic, six ounce container next to the machine and just squirt a little bit of cleaning fluid on the cleanin...
Do I need a machine to clean ?
Phoutin - I generally clean only one LP at a time on the Nitty Gritty. The whole process takes less than a minute, which is the beauty of these machines. Sometimes I clean several LPs at a time, but the machine tends to heat up a bit if used for m...
Do I need a machine to clean ?
The main benefit of a Nitty Gritty, VPI, SOTA or similar device is speed: I can clean an LP on my Nitty Gritty 2.5 in about 40 seconds. I do use Disc Doctor in really stubborn cases, and it works quite well - (although I still use the NG to vac-of...
Need advice re: Purchase of Reel to Reel

Recommendation - Complete Beethoven Sonatas
I agree that the Goode set is excellent. On vinyl, I really enjoy Claudio Arrau's performances (don't know if they have been reissued on CD). Also on vinyl, I've got a few of Ivan Moravec's performances - - - sublime!

Anybody using Satellite Radio?
I've been using Sirius for about 8 months. I've got it in my car (listen to nothing else), and in late July I got a portable tuner that I can hook up to either my main system or Bose Wave radios in the bedroom and at the office. While I really enjo...

Cartridge cleaning
I use a Zerodust on my Orotofon Jubilee - works great. Ocassionally, I use an old (circa 1985) Signet SK305 electronic stylus cleaner, with a very, very small bit of Last stylus cleaner. That also works great. Here's a tip (assuming your records ar...
Medieval-style music
You absolutely *must* get a copy of *A Feather on the Breath of God* - a collection of sequences and hymns by Hildegard of Bingen (died ca. 1179). This is on the Hyperion Label (CDA66039) and features performances by a group called Gothic Voices (...
