It was 44 years ago that...
Sure DSOTM set all kinds of Billboard Top 200 longevity records and sounds great, but I wouldn't say it altered a genre in any way. It's a slick Sgt. Pepper's style theme album and PF's total sellout effort. But no denying its success. Meddle mark...
It was 44 years ago that...
Bright moments footnote: in the early seventies between classes, the carillon atop Memorial Hall on the University of Delaware campus blasted Sgt. Pepper's far and wide through speakers installed to preserve the original chimes.
What are your favorite phono cartridges?
Nothing fancy here, but back in the day, before I gave all my vinyl away, I changed cartridges once a year, every year. My go to faves were Stanton 681EEE and Shure M91E and ED, all moving magnets. The best I used was a more pricey Ortofon OM-20E,...
How to read speaker sensitivity rating?
FWIW, when a speaker's specs include both its sensitivity and its power handling capability, it allows the user with a similarly capable amp to estimate how loud the speaker will play safely and continuously. For example, ratings of 87dB and 150 W...
Woofer sucking in and out
My turntable, a Dual 1219, was into woofer pumping too. Search A-gon's database for that and you may find more discussion. You're far from alone.
High-end amplifier clarification?
Piece of cake, high end solid state amps share these physical characteristics:1. rows of external heat sinks2. tiffany style gold connectors3. torodial tranformer(s)4. large can, screw-top, computer grade capacitors5. at least four power devices p...
Why do my HDCDs play lower on my HDCD machine?
One of the side effects of HDCD encoding is increased level when played on redbook CDPs. Playing HDCDs on HDCD capable players brings the level back to normal. Your Arcams are functioning as intended.
1970's receivers and integrated amps...
Try the late seventies Sansui 65 Watt AU-517 or the 85 Watt AU-717 integrated amp models. They sound sweet. Luckily the AU-717 remains plentiful due to its huge popularity back in the day. Expect to pay $200 for either model in original, excellent...
restoring a technics linear tracking turntable
My Dual 1219 platter kept spinning twice as long after shut-off using Mobil 1 when compared to light machine handy oil. I now use it on my Nakamichi capstan shafts with complete confidence. It's not grease but its man-made molecules are of uniform...
High Efficiency
Any Klipsch ought to work. What they have to be depends on how loud you like it. For a rule of thumb the power needs to double for each three decibel increase in volume. For example, my Sansui SP-X7000 speakers have a rated efficiency of 97db and ...
How to get
Preamps offering tone controls or loudness contours address the no guts at low level phenomenon.
No sound from cdp.
It could be the DAC's input switch, especially suspect if it drops out while playing. Try cycling thru the DAC's inputs a few times to get it to cooperate before going the unplug route.
what type of sand to use?
In my limited experience, sand and wives are not the ideal combination. Speaking of which, why did the oyster refuse to surrender her pearl??? ...because she was shellfish.
Aging technology versus inevitably aging ears...
The answer is yes, the old stuff is good enough. The stuff from 30 years ago is too. But I didn't think so until only recently. Allow me to explain. Lately my system has been going backwards in time, aka retrograde. Please bear with me as I collec...
what type of sand to use?
My favorite thread -- it's the only one I can answer with genuine authority, haha. See my now aging response here:http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?cspkr&1043108105&openflup&7&4#7
