Idiotic Vertical Biamping Question
If you have spent the money to bi-amp your system, my suggestion is to go the extra step and get an electric crossover. In my humble opinion, this produces the best bang for buck upgrade in sound.
Balanced connection XLR microphone cables ?
If you are handy with a soldering gun. You can buy shielded microphone cable and Neutrik XLR male & female connectors and make your own. It is tedious and fidgety, but you can get the exact length you need (no piles of unsightly cable lying ar...
Surge Suppressor or Not?
Yes. a surge protector is a good idea when lightning strikes. They do not affect the sound. They are easily made with a couple of varistors. Add an EMI filter and you have what most "power protectors" have for about 1/10 of the cost. There have be...
Power Conditioning: Exactpower vs. Rotel vs. other
I built a power conditioner using an isolation transformer with balanced outputs for about $400. The improvement was superb. You can read about it on the Plitron web site. I would recommend going for the "low noise" version transformer. Commercial...
how to get rid of hum
I have had 2 episodes with hum. Cable TV coaxial lines are notorious for carrying hum into a stereo system. Try disconnecting coax lines and see if this is the source of your hum. A small isolation transformer put in the coaxial cable eliminated t...
Who can convert single ended to balanced?
Parts Express sells a balanced/rca converter by a company named ACT. I use it and it works well. It is a pricey little devil at $65.
AC Power 101

Adding a subwoofer to a 2 channel amp
I would recommend the external crossover (such as Marchand or DbX) and then driving the subwoofer with a separate amp. I have done bi-amping with a second pre-amp out and no cross-over but when the cross-over was introduced there were significant ...
Another sign SACD is dying
I agree with Nrchy--Support SACD please! If you are an audiophile and truly care about good sound--you need to buy SACD. There is more dynamic range and far more resolution on high frequencies. Don't let this wonderful format die.
Words From the Wise
Great thread. 1)Tube amps are over rated-but they do sound lovely; solid state is a better bang for the buck but not as much fun to look at in the dark. 2)Vinyl is wonderful but it is a pain, and expensive and you need a record cleaner. 3)SACD is ...
Why aren't component active XOs more popular?
Who says they aren't popular? The reason you don't see many is once you have one in your system--You are not going to give it up! Occassionaly you will see one and they sell fast. For me the greatest single improvement was going from a passive bi-...
What is the MOST audiophile friendly city ???
Definitely NOT Mobile, Alabama. Portland, Oregon for its size has the best used record and CD stores, used audio stores and some wonderful audio dealers. It also has public JAZZ and Classical FM stations! I miss it.
Is SACD a dead format?
Not dead, but not mainstream. It is morphing into a niche market for audiophiles only--just like vinyl. With universal machines proliferating, those who are willing to pay will get SACDs. Sadly, few people are willing to pay for sound quality, so ...
