how to disable volume control on DAC/Pre amp
Let me add: While operating as described, and you have too much gain, then, incremently turn down the DAC`s volume to further attenuate the signal.
how to disable volume control on DAC/Pre amp
While you have both hooked together, and turned off, have the Pre`s volume turned all the way down and the DAC`s volume turned all the way up. Your DAC`s volume is not attenuating the signal while the Pre`s volume is.  Then, turn both on, and ope...

Quicksilver - is a third suggestion a charm?
Budget preamp recommendation...besides Schiit.
"So many suggestions" - Yes, that is what you are going to get, based on that type of question. Used Backert - great suggestion, but hard to find. Forgot to mention: Aric Audio. Be willing to stretch the budget, and not limit yourself too much,...

Leaving my amplifier on ok?
Use "search discussions" above, where topic has been discussed, at length. For solid state amps: best to leave "on", all the time, if you listen frequently. This reduces "thermal cycling" of the circuit board.
Is simpler better?
Simplicity - HAA! When computers were combined with audio, all simplicity went out the window. Just put the disk in the drawer, press close, and hit play. - no simpler than that.
