montana eps crossover ???
Drop me a note and I'll give you Peter's phone number if you don't already have it. He is great to talk to.
Name three of yours the most favourite drummers
Buddy Rich, Neil Pert & Keith Moon. I know it's a boring answer, but I could listen to them all day! Of course, Ginger Baker, Bill Bruford and too many more to mention are also great! Interesting that the Latin percussionists are not heavily m...
Very BIG Room? Music and Home Theatre Challenge
Ditto to the big full range speakers. My sound room is about 32.5 x 19.5 x 12 and it has a large doorway into a substantial kitchen / eating / relaxation area about 14 x 24 x 12+. Even with four 15 inch woofers and four 9 inch mid woofers in cabin...
Yet another "battle of the formats"
Robm321 has it right -- most often, both sides lose the war one way or another. Here we go again.
Using Bad Recording to Evaluate a System
Hey, if most of your recordings are mediocre to bad (i.e., the music you like is generally recorded that way), why not get a system that makes them sound all right? You save some money and you enjoy the music -- isn't that what it's all about? The...
room setup
Robm, I didn't see anything suggesting that low frequencies are a problem. Nsgarch calculated that only higher frequencies than about 200 Hz would be affected. The issue, I believe, is potentially one of soundstage and a bit of higher end distorti...
Favorite Center??
Centers are best matched with the rest of the system so that will also be an issue as you shop for a center. I've been impressed with the Monitor Audio Silver's (haven't heard the reference Golds) and Paradigm Reference speakers. The sound is very...
does anybody still listen
I wish all the albums I've ever owned were still in good shape, but there's a lot I didn't know when young. Generally though, I love to hear it all -- old, new, slow, fast. It depends on the mood. Like you, I listen a lot more to the older stuff w...
wire shielding
My understanding is that any natural material like silk will eventually let enough oxygen through to oxidize the wires and that could be a bad thing. I believe teflon is a good material in that it protects the wire without introducing capacitance ...
hard 's'
I agree with Newbee. If it sounds OK outside the listening position, you're probably getting too many reflections at the listening position. It might help if you described your set-up: size of room, locations of speakers, location of listening pos...
room setup
Two feet behind the front may be OK -- let your ears be the judge of whether another foot or two would improve things. For when you do some serious listening, you could try throwing an acoustic blanket over the TV -- it's a lot easier than moving ...
Why do people write mean things about musicians
If the companies paid attention to sites like this, they'd charge less for cd's and move a lot more plastic! As Newbee said, companies only pay attention to sales so any comments here roll right off. As for the musicians, who are they going to bel...
New Cowboy Junkies- Wow
Thanks for the tip. I'm a CJ junkie so I'm looking forward to the new disc!
The Night Air
Good points! I tried something like that once. Since vacuum tubes sound so nice and systems sound better in the mountains, I figured I'd go all the way and listen in a vacuum. Nothing, nada, nix!!! I still can't figure that out ;-)
What is the test of time?
Kthomas, I agree with Creeper. That's a fine test. I would add that "N" needs to span generations. For example, "Do other generations still actively listen to it"
