Any John Hartford fans?
Great stuff, though I find some of his albums a lot more listenable than others . His "Big Rock Candy Mountain" stole the show IMO, in the movie "Down from the Mountain". And I've been known to claim that "Baking Soda" from the 1967 Earthwords alb...
ar turntable resurrection advice
I agree with both the M97xe and DL103 at their respective price points. One more, which is right in between those two $$$-wise is the Ortofon OM-20 ($129 at Garage-A-Records). It's an excellent sound in it's own right, and you can later upgrade to...
HELP, Pls - re Automatic Turntables, Vintage/New
There's a mint, very low hours, DP-45f on Ebay right now that I would grab if the bidding stays reasonable. Perfectly good table, pretty much the same as a 52f - and even ultra-mint ones are usually under $300. http://cgi.ebay.com/DENON-DP-45F-DIR...
sealed 3-ways
Agree with Hales - also used Alon V's can be had cheap.
Is harmonic accuracy and timbre important at all?
Stevecham - There is one thing that can be done. Earplugs!
Vinyl lovers--in case you haven't tried this yet
It's pretty simple - it's much, much, much easier to cut, master, and press a single waveform (mono) onto a physical surface without losing or altering the ultra-subtle information that creates "presence" and timbral accuracy, than it is to cut 2 ...
Is harmonic accuracy and timbre important at all?
Accuracy (especially timbre) is important to me for the obvious reasons stated above. To a large degree, overall frequency response is easily corrected upstream if needed - but the subtleties of timbre are not. If a speaker can't even reproduce a ...
Availability of cheap vinyl in SF?
Amoeba is the biggest game in SF if you want quality - the prices (for classical) are pretty good. Their $1 classical record bins often have some very decent stuff. Ditto with the Berkeley Amoeba. Stores like Streetlight and Rasputins are worth a ...
Velodyne ULD 15 repair
What exact problems are they having? If the foam is shot, you could try contacting Madisound, or even the guys who specialize in speaker surrounds on Ebay, and see if they have any leads on the size you need. The relevant dimensions are the overall...
Driver replacement China
Do what I did with my Spica's in 1989 - if you're really planning on having the speakers that long. If you're buying new, tell the dealer that you will purchase the speakers ONLY if they include a replacement set of drivers up front - at or near c...
Rat Shck Presidian 40-5053. Next Sonic Impact?
I pretty much agree with Reubent. I haven't had any cheap speakers since my Spica TC-50's fifteen years ago, but the Presidians would certainly be no match for them with music. An easy, affordable line array might be a legitimate idea though. or t...
Rat Shck Presidian 40-5053. Next Sonic Impact?
Just shoved an old t-shirt a few inches into each port and draped the rest over the top and then behind. Makes the upper lows and lower mids much more natural IMO without any effect on the freq. range as far as I can hear. So it's probably worth a...
Rat Shck Presidian 40-5053. Next Sonic Impact?
Hooked 'em up tonight. First impressions - they are undoubtedly excellent for the price, and may repond to some tweaking or EQ. They image very well, and do have an excellent coherence - which is of course to be expected since they're basically cr...
Dahlquist 28 Opinions and other
I'm a Dahlquist fan myself, and have heard most of them. The DQ-28's are not my favorite. The sealed box DQ-20's and 20i's (bi-ampable) are much better IMHO. If you're on a budget, I'd look for a pair of the 20i's, upgrade the caps, refoam the woo...
Rat Shck Presidian 40-5053. Next Sonic Impact?
Picked up a pair yesterday just for fun. If they sound decent I'll pick up a 2nd pair and try stacking them. I'll report back when I play around with 'em a bit. ALso - The floor models in the store simply say "Made in China" - nothing about assemb...
