12AX7A preamp tubes - ribbed vs smooth plate
Glenn Croft (RIP) told me he used buy Telefunken ECC803S for £5.95 a pop. Now they sell for $1500+ Back in the day, you could buy old stock Tele 12ax7s for 10 bucks a piece

Ribbed Telefunkens are a little more open and detailed than the smooth plates. I run both in a number of preamps.

Dirt on stylus. Drop gently up and down onto isopropyl alcohol soaked spot on Mr. Muscle Magic Eraser a few times.

@lalitk  Hmmm, they lost me at loss of detail. See more comments on sound here If you’re looking for spotlit detail, then it won’t be for you.

Because if ownership is established after the fact, you forfeit the goods. Honestly, what would it matter if stolen or not?
SEEKING ADVICE: Which component would you upgrade first?
What I love about the SpinClean is that I can give a record a quick clean if it has picked up a little dust. I do not use dry brushes. The SC detergent apparently grass the dirt out of the distilled water, thereby keeping it cleaner and necessitat...

@lalitk Yes. I don't use any. I used to use a 10" record with acceptable results. The best I've heard was a thin, soft, vinyl-type compound used in @slaw MyMat. However, it's worth experimenting. I did not like graphite or copper. Forget cork.  ...

@lalitk Possibly predictably, I’m not a fan of damping or locking things down. Listening without sounds more open and free. You can buy a reasonable device on Amazon for $27 which looks great but doesn’t add anything. I know. It’s in the graveyard...

@pindac I know who said it, obviously. I'm not sure it matters. This is not a trial by fire. 😉 I looked into using Panzerholz myself, having worked with plans and quotes with a respected builder. I may revisit.  An interesting statement, I wonde...

@pindac Indeed. Although, I have a graveyard of parts that came with big promises. The most recent rejected items were the Korf ceramic headshell, the SPF 1.2kg copper platter, and the Audio Sensibility OCC phono cable. This is not to say these fi...

@lalitk More than welcome. Note that when you try an aftermarket component, you can always reverse the change. The reason many folks keep the new part is because it sounds better than what was there before. ...aftermarket bearing, platter and so...
