Looking for integrated better than my Rogue Sphinx
Sunnyjim....you have an amp that you seem to like for the most part, but you haven't at least tried different tubes. It would seem to be a prudent step to take before the expense of buying something new. Another amp to consider that hasn't been me... 
Shopping for speakers at $1500-$2000 is a chore.
In one of your previous threads, I recommended the Ascend Acoustics Sierra2 speakers as something you should consider. I don't know how close this is to you, but you can arrange for an audition at their facility in San Clemente. 
Recommed a medium sized monitors that can go loud
You might consider Ascend Acoustics Sierra-2's. When I listen to mine I hear dynamic, clean, transparent, and musical. 
Recommendations for inexpensive Integrated
The NAD D 3020 at $499 has received a lot of praise. 
Speakers that can be placed close to the back wall
Von Schweikert VR22 and VR33 are designed to be placed close to the wall.

Morrow offers a 60 day trial on their cables. I don't find them clinical, but paying for the optional burn in service is probably a good idea. With that and the 60 day trial period, you should be able to make an informed decision.

You/he might take a look at "the Clue" monitor from Sjofn HiFi.

Sounds like you're a candidate for The Clue from Sjofn Hi Fi. Just google clue speaker and you can find the site and a good Positive Feedback review. 
Smallish floorstander that sounds good placed just
Meadowlark Swifts are sometimes available used in the $500-$600 range. Good sound and easy to drive. Front transmission line ports.

I agree that "Live at Ethell's" is excellent, but it's by Clifford Jordan.
