Thor ta-1000 pre cap replacement -- advice
Always good to listen to Grannyring! It's been a while but I think he helped me when I was looking at caps for my Thor years ago. I am one of those guys who absolutely loved the audio note copper mylar caps with it. But I am someone who loves orga...
Shindo Labs Amps and Preamps
Not sure if this thread is active. but looking for advice. I used to own a Shindo Montrachet amp and lucked into an extra dealer-provided NOS tube set for it from the guy who sold me the amp... which I always kept as a backup. After selling the Mo...
Living with unsolvable hum - Any audio detectives out there?
I have not checked/cleaned the preamp fuse. Will do that first, as well as disconnecting wifi and other simple tests suggested, such as trying a backup amp to see if the interaction with my amps is a problem. Then check pre tube pins seatings. The...
Living with unsolvable hum - Any audio detectives out there?
Wow Evil Stu thanks for all that! I don't have much slack in the power cord and it is heavy-ish Cardas Golden Ref. Hmm.Good Stu
Living with unsolvable hum - Any audio detectives out there?
I'm not interested in getting rid of the preamp. It is too good and my system is balanced just the way I like it. It has taken years to get to this point, so if I have to live with the hum, I will ;)But I really appreciate all the great ideas offe...
Living with unsolvable hum - Any audio detectives out there?
Wow thanks for all the ideas. If the pre power supply tubes could cause hum, I should check them and sockets. That is one thing I have not done. I could just replace them. So are you saying that unmatched power supply tubes could create hum like t...
Living with unsolvable hum - Any audio detectives out there?
Thanks GS556. Before I do any of that, does the fact that replacing my preamp with another preamp eliminates the hum make that experiment unnecessary? Or are you suggesting these electrical issues could cause an issue with some preamps but not oth...
Living with unsolvable hum - Any audio detectives out there?
Audio2design: I set up a star grounding system and grounded all the components to the Ground Zero unit, including wires from the amplifier chassis to it. No effect. I did not try a wire from the preamp ground to the power amplifier chassis by itse...
Living with unsolvable hum - Any audio detectives out there?
Thanks for all the responses!noromance: Wifi routers etc can't affect the system if their AC circuits are turned off, or can they? I tried turning all breakers off except the sound system, and the hum persists.russ693: I think I tried reversing pl...
Which Snell Type A do I have? A-I or A-Original?
I guess the power discussion is like it always is. All things equal more power is usually better. but being a tube guy I will always take 50 watts of tube power over 250 watts of solid state power any day ... With rare exceptions ;)I ran my first ...
Which Snell Type A do I have? A-I or A-Original?
Another thing is the crossover. If you ever have to replace any caps or other components, replace them exactly the way they are configured. If there are several smaller value caps stacked, replace them exactly that way. Repair people will get you ...
Which Snell Type A do I have? A-I or A-Original?
Agree on all counts Roberjerman! I have heard plenty of six figure systems that sound like hifi. The Snells, even driven by modest electronics, sound like music.Yes now I remember the white stuff... Putty to seal the woofer chassis. I remember pee...
Which Snell Type A do I have? A-I or A-Original?
I'm not sure what the white stuff is. It has been awhile since I've been inside of my snells. I assume you are not talking about white putty around the woofer itself around the dust cover... That is mass loading that needs to be replaced if you ha...
more gain = more dynamics or less?
Very helpful guys and thanks for keeping it high-level. I think my basic question is answered which is that inadequate gain can cause limited dynamic range. So I will seek the sweet spot in the middle. Thanks!
Hum mystery - Crown K2 amp driving passive subs
The mystery is solved. Why the Rotel didn't hum may be because it has a two-pronged plug and perhaps didn't carry the ground hum through. In any case, the hum disappears after four seconds with the Crown because my friend and tech discovered that ...
