More Detail From a CD?
Your experience doesn’t surprise me. I’ve had the same experience over and over. CD sounds better than streaming when comparing apples to apples (price, technology level, etc). I’m sure there are exceptions to the rule. Just follow your ears.
Does Anyone Use a Portable CD Player as Their Source?
Anyone who has tried this, what portable CD player were you using and did you like your results?
Does Anyone Use a Portable CD Player as Their Source?
I also use a Playstation 1 (SCPH-1001 is the good one). I’ve modded it to run off 12V car-style batteries (sealed, not vented) with DC-DC regulators. This setup also sounds good and I go back to it quite often. The simplicity of the portable CD pl...
Does Anyone Use a Portable CD Player as Their Source?
I’m using line out with a 3.5 mm to RCA cable plugged directly into my passive preamp. I keep the lines as short as possible so I don’t lose signal. There’s not a lot of signal to go around but that really depends on the portable CD player specs. ...
Critical subwoofer tip
I have a question for people who have phase controls for their subs. How do these work? 0 and 180 seems simple enough. Same thing as swapping the speaker leads. How is continuously variable phase control being accomplished though? Is this just a d...
Preamp connection to multiple powered subwoofers
@kalali Your situation sounds very similar to mine. I run two sealed 10” passive subwoofers and have experimented with a variety of setups to get the signal and send it to the subwoofers’ amplifier(s). In theory, high level inputs have the potent...
Remote Control (Passive) Preamp
I took a cheapo FX Audio tube buffer and added a low-noise DC power supply, replaced the low-quality pot with a voltage divider using Amtrans AMRG carbon film resistors, and swapped the tubes for a matched pair of GE JAN 5654W tubes. It’s definite...
Remote Control (Passive) Preamp
To close the loop, I ended up with a Khozmo stepped attenuator preamp with remote control. It is very well-built! Even the remote. I’ve noticed nice gear can sometimes have cheesy remotes. Not so with the Khozmo. I did struggle for awhile to figur...
Does Anyone Think CD is Better Than Vinyl/Analog?
I am really appreciating all the feedback from everyone. Thank you. Happy New Year’s!
Nirvana Electronic Works NEW A-60 Amplifier.WOOW
Good info. I hadn’t seen that first link:“I gave Mitch Freidman permission to use the design, but found my generosity abused, and I spent a lot of time disassociating myself from N.E.W.”

Just to clarify: I don’t mean to attribute malice to Nelson. I’m sure he’s a good, moral person. Just spitballing ideas. Assuming he did play a hand in the design, why not take credit? The N.E.W. amps get rave reviews!
Nirvana Electronic Works NEW A-60 Amplifier.WOOW
This is so strange. I’ve been trying to track down the history of N.E.W. for a while now. Multiple sources say Pass wasn’t involved and a few sources are certain Pass was involved, but for some reason he isn’t stepping up and taking credit. If tru...
Does Anyone Think CD is Better Than Vinyl/Analog?
Audition - that’s important feedback that I like to hear. Everyone talks about pace and rhythm, clarity, noise, dynamics, etc., but I think at the end of the day emotional involvement is probably near the top of everyone’s list whether we are cons...
Does Anyone Think CD is Better Than Vinyl/Analog?
I’m really appreciating all the feedback! Teo - does multibit solve the problem you are talking about?Skypunk - you are right. Who cares what other people think as long as you enjoy what you hear? I definitely enjoy what I hear! I suppose I’m curi...
Tube Amp soundstage
Throwing in my two cents: Tubes add harmonic distortions and I believe these distortions cause a slight smearing of the soundstage which gives the illusion of more width, depth and height.
