Midrange Better Than Harbeth or Spendor?
Shadorne,Sorry, I missed your response. Needless to say, I'm with you on this one.Marty
Midrange Better Than Harbeth or Spendor?
I'm a bit surprised that no one's yet mentioned Quad. I've never owned Harbeth/Spendor, but at audition I've admired both brands' mid-band a lot, but have always ended up going for more full-range alternatives. Same deal with the (older) Quads I'v...
Merlin Fan's-What VSM is best bang for buck????
I recently upgraded a late production VSM SE ( more similar to the MM/MX than earlier SEs ). I really liked the speakers prior to the upgrade and certainly prefer them now. All the VSMs I've heard share a very strong family sound. It's funny that ...
Looking for compilation suggestions
If you can find either of the 2 CDs from the"In Their Own Words" collection.Songs, plus commentary from the performers recorded live at The Bottom Line in NYC. Sound quality gets unbelievably poor on a few tracks, but these recordings definitely p...
Artists 'SELLING OUT' - can we discuss?
A new Volvo commercial features an old Feelies track. The band has been gone for years, so it's unlikely to affect their future output. I'm not quite ready to buy a Volvo, but I like their taste in music.Marty
Outdoor audiophile gear?
Do the rock speakers work with jazz?
What amp should be used with merlin vsm's?
I've used a bunch of different amps with my VSMs over the years and most have worked out very well.My personal favorites include:Cary 805 (might be over your stated budget, but really excellent)Cary 300B monos (magic with vocal music)Pancor Dyna r...
Phillip Glass Fans
Audiotomb -I had to smile at your description of the PG Ensemble live:it is almost word for word the way I've described it in the past;Nearly asleep, then BAM! (apologies to Emiril) like it's almost a physiological effect. You certainly walk away ...
Phillip Glass Fans
The soundtrack "Northstar" (sometimes called "Etoile Polaire") was Glass' crossover breakthrough for rock fans. If you're coming at his music from that angle, this is a good start.I saw his ensemble perform the piece live sometime in the '70s and ...
3a l'integral nouveau Vs. Verity parisfal encore
Cat,If my previous communications didn't make it clear, in my experience the Verity is far, far "denser" than either the VSM or the deCapo - if I get your analogy. The physicality of music is more dramatic on the P/E. OTOH, individual instrumental...
3a l'integral nouveau Vs. Verity parisfal encore
I used to own deCapos and still own P/Es and Merlin VSMs. This is not the comparison you were seeking comment on, but...The Verity AIN"T LEAN!!Certainly not in comparison with Wilson or Merlin or the deCapo.FWIWMarty
Need list of 92db speakers and above.
The Ref 3a deCapo is a large-ish 92db stand mount that gets to +/- 42 hz with a very flat impedance curve (nom=8 ohm) due to a minimal x-over. Not the last word in dynamics, but it will provide extended bandwidth and a neutral midrange from 5W/ch....
Anyone listened to ML Vantage?
I got a (brief) opportunity to listen in as a customer at a local dealer A-B'd the Vantage vs the Summit. The music wasn't my cup of tea - synth heavy rock- so I can't tell you much about the speakers in the absolute. I can say that, off the one l...
Cost no Object but Small Room
I've used both Verity Parsifal Encores and current spec Merlin VSMs in a similar sized space with great success. They sound different one to the other, but you'd find the time well spent to check out both.Good Luck,Marty
Stax soul jag
Oops! Brief brain cramp. The Staples weren't on Hi Records- I meant Ann Peebles ("I Can't Stand The Rain", among others).Fun thread.Marty
