Two way vs. Three way Speakers
A simple 2-way with really good drivers and crossover put in a properly designed box can be absolutely stellar.  As stanwal menionted, you're most likely to give up deep bass from a good 2-way, because anything larger than an 8" woofer tends to ca...
the big one: how do you choose speakers? By what features, data?
@grislybutter @knotscott @rpeluso so that means you need to demo it at home or at the dealer? Do you narrow down your list based on something(s) for what you would demo? Wherever you can find them to get a first listen....dealer, shows, audio ...
the big one: how do you choose speakers? By what features, data?
I don't consider myself an expert, but to me the overwhelmingly most significant criteria are how they sound and work in my room.  Price is always a consideration, but the specs, brands, design, etc., mean little in comparison to their sound.
Vintage turntable with a modern phono stage, is it worth it?
I definitely it think it could be worth it. Do some careful research, and see what might be the best fit for your rig within budget, and that will best your Mani.
Goodbye Everyone
Wishing you all the best....thanks for all your contributions!
Forced to DIY
Six kids and one modest income equals plenty of DIY around here - house, car, stereo, appliances, furnishings, jewelry...you name it.  I’ve done so much DIY for so long, it’s seems strange to hire someone while I stand there and watch while they f...
Best monoblocks for Tannoy Legacy Arden
It could be at least partly due to a bright recording of Aerosmith.  Many rock recordings are a bit thin and shrill IMO.  I'd be  more inclined to try some tube rolling or swap some cables before replacing the amps.
Budget re-cabling
If you're not opposed to adding your own terminations, the Monoprice cable is really quite good.  It's very similar to Canare and other bulk cables, but tends to run a bit less.
un-becoming an audiophile
We all have a unique level we need to reach in order to let the music sweep us away.  Sometimes its as simple as a car radio, others need a wonderful system tailored to their tastes...whatever that may be.   A good beer or two can help if it's no...
Hales Design Group Transcendence 5 Grill Cloth
They’re worth fixing. I had the privilege of hearing a pair of modified Hales a few weeks ago, on an advanced system driven by Convergent amps and preamp where there had formerly been an impressive pair of Magicos. The Hales were impressive too! ...
Subwoofer modification yielded excellent results.
You may have ended up with the equivalent function of an aperiodic vent design. They all have their pros and cons, so there’s no reason this couldn’t work out great for you.
We should reject hard-to-drive speakers more often
MBL is an awesome speaker.  One of the most serious speakers in the world.  MBL can be brutally revealing and difficult to drive.  Bring your A game or keep looking.  I've heard Convergent amps drive the heck out of them, but a lot of really good ...
Advice for an aspiring musician
Piano and guitar for sure. University is nice to have for a back-up if you don't get a big break....most don't, regardless of talent.  You can teach even if performing doesn't pay the mortgage.
Solid copper or stranded copper for speaker cables? What is your choice and why?
There are always pros and cons with each type (of most things in audio).  I'd think a hybrid of both (or multiple sizes) might be the sweet spot.  But also "as always", it's subjective, and there are variables that are unique to every situation.
Does Hearing Loss Disqualify Me from Audiophiledom?
IMHO, hearing is to audio what eye sight is to fine art. Yes, you need to be able to hear or see for both, but better sight or hearing ability doesn’t necessarily make you better at identifying and recognizing the finer points....experience and ex...
