Speaker upgrade
I use AER BD3 drivers in Oris 150 front horns from 200 Hz to 8kHz in my fully horn loaded, DEQX DSP controlled, tri amplified DIY speakers.  To my old, but experienced ears the SQ is excellent.  That experience makes me think the Charney might mer...
What's your favorite speaker finish?
My latest DIY speakers are veneered with blonde Burmese teak veneer that used to be available from Rockler.    I used much #0000 steel wool and very fine sandpapers  in between one coat of Minwax Natural Wood Finsh , four coats of polyeurartane va...
Women who enjoy quality speakers
With my wife and me it all began in 1968.  She had a Lear 8 track stereo in her Chevrolet which sounded worlds better than the squawky AM radio in my old beater.  That started the two of us on a search for better and better sound which continues t...
When was the first time that you heard great sounding speakers?
For me it was KLH 9s in a warehouse room in the building with a book store in Anniston, Alabama in 1973.  My wife and I visited the store, and I mentioned to the owner that I was an audiophile, and I wished he sold LPs.  He said no LPs, but he did...
Bass Driver Size - how much better is an extra inch?
One way to get the transient response of a six or eight inch woofer out of a fifteen inch woofer is to put an appropriate fifteen in a well designed corner horn.  Admittedly this mandates a largish enclosure.  Mine are 18 cu.ft. each.
Pondering a change after 30 odd years...
I would advise you to think long and hard before you let go of your 1+1s.  Back in the 1980s I owned and loved a pair of 2+2s, but foolishly sold them in order to try to do better.  It took me nearly thirty years to find speakers I liked better th...
Do active speakers interest you? Also, let's talk directivity
Active speakers can be a real delight for DIY speaker builders.  A good DSP like the DEQX unit I use with my fully horn loaded triamplified DIY speakers allows not only speaker correction, room correction, time and phase correction, etc. but also ...
Electrostatic Speakers
I owned Acoustat 2=2 electrostatics for years and loved them.  Ever since I sold them I have been trying to find speakers with the  clarity, speed and imaging of electrostatics but also with great dynamics and slam.  I feel that I have finally ach...
I'm never going to hear a megaspeaker in a good room am I?
" So if 99.9 % of us will never hear these speakers or see them in a good listening room, maybe Stereophile should stop reviewing them and let a magazine like Oligarchs Monthly. "As an amateur speaker designer and builder for over forty years ...
Automatic Room Correction has won the Subwoofer Wars
I have ARC with my home theater system and also vastly more sophisticated and capable DEQX DSP with my two channel music system.  I have never been impressed with ARC, but the DEQX is a totally different matter. To begin with performing speaker co...
Should people who can't solder, build or test their speakers be considered audiophiles?
" mahlman, I don't understand your question. What does it have to do with the question at hand? I read as much or as little of a book as pleases me. That doesn't make me a non-reader. "  What it makes you in this case is uninformed as to wh...

Should people who can't solder, build or test their speakers be considered audiophiles?
During the last 50 years I have built many DIY speakers, amplifier kits, simple electronic components, installed electronic component upgrades etc.  Due to a worsening vision impairment I am no longer able to do any of there things.  Does this sud...
Tekton Design Moab
" When I talk to Eric before I purchase them he had said that I was getting the same amount of woofer surface area in one of his 4-10 subs that you would get in a single 15 inch SVS."If I am not mistaken four ten inch drivers would have approxi...
There's a lot more bass in a 6.5" driver than most of you think
I use Mirage M290 two ways with 6.5 inch mid/woofers as computer speakers.  They produce a good sound with a balanced frequency response, but to compare the bass from ported 6.5s to the bass from good 15" woofers loaded in 25 Hz Bill Fitzmaurice d...
