Planar/panel speakers to replace Carver Amazings
IIRC, BG used to make a drop-in replacement for the Carvers in their RD series, but since the company was sold they seem to have stopped selling the RD's to the public. If you're considering vintage speakers, I'd recommend that you go with a brand ...

Stickman, I don't know anyone who has a pair or how many they've shipped, but I know they're shipping now. Wendell asked me to pass along a message and some pictures on the Planar Asylum. He writes,"Another 30.7 was shipped today, and three more p...

Hi Greg,I won't be at the show, alas, but I hope someday we'll be able to have that discussion, sounds intriguing!
narrow and wide baffles and imaging
Yes, the IRS V had a very large baffle. But Arnie Nudell, physicist that he was, curved it back to minimize the effects of diffraction. Also, the note that the mids and tweeters are right next to one another, producing something close to a coherent...
narrow and wide baffles and imaging
They were amazing, weren't they? I remember having the sense that I could go into the soundstage and walk between the instruments.Soundsrealaudio, that's an interesting point and one I'd never heard.
narrow and wide baffles and imaging
I've heard from a speaker manufacturer that the main reason we're seeing so many ultra-narrow baffles is WAF -- narrow speakers can be shoehorned between the furniture.Otherwise, I think it's a tradeoff. As Alon Wolf said, a larger baffle reduces ...
Magnepan 30.7s visit Jacksonville
I envy you! Still haven't heard them. Like BDP24, I have a pair of Tympani IVa's, so I know what you mean about surprise of hearing real bass slam from planars -- and I gather that the 30.7's have even more of it than the Tympanis. I love Tympani ...
Which magnepan
I concur with those who suggest the 1.7 -- and also with those who have suggested that there's something weird going on here, perhaps with the setup. They can sound great in a smaller room than yours and I've never heard of the curious symptom you...
Has anyone else auditioned the new Magnepan 30.7s?
Cool! They haven't come to my part of the country yet -- he expects to hit the East Coast in the fall -- but I gather Wendell has covered the West.

Faxer, minor technical quibble -- while it is true that copper is a better conductor than aluminum, it is a worse conductor *per unit mass.* That, not cost, is why Magnepan and most other speaker manufacturers use it instead of copper, which would...

I asked Wendell if he could say anything more, and he said "It will be between the dealer, Magnepan and the customer. So, he would need to contact his dealer to get started."

I just heard more from Wendell. He writes,"BTW -- I would not call the first speakers 'prototypes' since it implies changes might be coming (which is not true). "Since the 30.7 is so big and complicated, the safe process is to take one speaker th...

Don, I don't know how many have shipped. I only know that they are coming off the assembly line.Wendell is a friend, yes, but that doesn't make me a Magnepan shill. Rather, since we speak and email frequently, I hear a lot about what's going on at...

Don, they've been a success and that while they're in production there's a wait list to get them. Wendell had told me that he wasn't sure that they'd make any money from them and thought they might just have flagship value, but they've been deligh...
The Magnificent Magnepan 30.7 speakers....wait, I don’t like planars!
daveyf,Heh, yes, that would be a bit small for 30.7's. I empathize, my room is small as well! Only a madman would put Tympanis in it (bows).
