Review: Monarchy Audio Model 33 Preamplifier
Nice review and a very nicely matched system. Since you are familiar with Monarchy, you might want to try their 48/96 upsampler. I was sceptical at first but decided that it was an inexpensive way to try upsampling with Redbook CD's and no 24/96 o...
BMG CD's ARE worse
Be careful when generalizing the superiority of Japanese CD's. True, there are some truly amazing recordings to be had there, but most of this is of "classic" status (regardles of genre). Listen to past and current J-Pop offerings and other materi...
Help with FedEx claim......What would YOU do?
Listen to Ejlif's advice regarding small claims court. For a measly grand they will either pay-up or not show up, giving you a default judgement. If they did show, you have an excellent chance of prevailing if you have some type of paperwork (not ...
Using subs as speaker stands ?
If you decide to try this, and I don't see any reason not to at least give it a go, you might compare the rubber isolation pods to using a sheet or Sorbothane, between the subs/monitors.
Looking for a great tube headphone amp
I second the Melos SHA1 or its relatives. Sounds very, very good and reasonable from a tube rolling standpoint. You get a pretty nice pre-amp in the bargain, too. I am a dedicated Stax man, but appreciate the Melos, also.
Question about Mesa Baron
Concur with above. Vast improvement over stock with tri-tube and WIMA mods. Also recommend soft-start mod if you do not have this feature and are sending back for the other mods. Running my CLS's (mains in Mini-Statement system) in 2/3 triode via ...
Mosfet amps A true compromise betw. tubes and SS?
Very intersting points of view here. I predict, however, that you will like the Wolcott/Prodigy combination. I borrowed a friend's Wolcotts and they were superb running the CLS's in my Mini-Statement system. I understand that the Atmasphere's are ...
What time do you wear?
Oris Big Crown Commander. Omega Speedmaster. Swiss Army (Victorinox).
Where to buy NOS 12AX7's?Which ones?
Mazda chrome plates (early 60's French military stock) did the trick with my Baron. The Mazda's will run about $50.00 per tube -- a bargain since you'll get 5,000 to 10,000 hours on the input tubes. I also like the Tele's in this amp. Have not tri...
looking for the right integrated
Ooops! Just noticed the ss part of your post. Hell, check out the VTL anyway. You might change your mind. Good luck.
looking for the right integrated
You might want to check out the VTL85i. I heard it briefly and was mighty impressed. Loaded with features, too. Retail is supposed to be $2500, so with a little negotiating, the price should come in right around your budget. Too new of a product f...
The best Subwoofer
Hey Doug, you beat me to the punch. I would suggest that the SW800's are probably just about as good as other forward firing, multi-driver subs for most speaker applications -- can't say for sure since I haven't heard them outside of the CLS appli...
mbl 101d speakers suck
I also heard them driven by MLB power and thought they sounded great. Really interesting visually, too. Being the obviously articulate fellow you are, why do you even care if they "suck" so much? I look forward to your next thread with bated breat...
who makes good sub cables
AQ Midnight or Clear do excellent jobs as bass cables. Both can be bought used for a fraction of their original cost.
MLogan CLS w/sub -vs- Magnapan w/sub
It took a while, but I like my CLS1's with Kinergetics SW800 subs (10 ten inch forward firing drivers in twin towers playing down to 16htz). Since the subs and crossover (and Compusound software) were desgined specifically for the speaker, integra...
