Biggest audio hoaxes
MC, that does appear to be a coherent explanation from Geoff.  He wasn't always just full of (admittedly pretty funny) snark.  Do you get to pick the hat you eat?
Upscale Audio and Primaluna
@hilde45   Yep.  I think it offers decent value for money, but it is not "top shelf".  I've had a Dialogue One driving my second system for over 10 years now, and it just hums along sounding pretty darned good.  It does not compete in the same tie...
Where are the young audiophiles?
I visited a local audio shop that opened its doors here in Minneapolis just last November.  The two proprietors are Gen X, and they see plenty of opportunity coming as their generation and younger elevate in incomes, and they see LP's as the gatew...
Can you tell me why I didn't like the Reference 3a MM's?
That's a fair point regarding the many iterations over a long lifespan.  I have owned three versions spanning from the late 80's into the mid-00's and I never experienced bloated one-note bass, except when my wife insisted that they reside in the ...
Anything SS sounds better than D'Agostino ?
@inna   So, I did get around to putting the Luxman M900u back into my system and listened to it for over a week.  In my system, the D'Agostino S250 was a very clear winner, as I feel I am hearing all of the detail that the Luxman was digging out o...
What’s your obstacles on the way of listening
@ghdprentice  I had terrible sound variation due to A/C going on, both mine and all my neighbors on our transformer, it seemed.  I fixed it by using a PS Audio P-20 regenerator, and from what you describe, this might work for you, too.  Sounds gre...
Is it a Merger or Bust?
I'm thinking of adding a drop down screen and a killer projector to get video.  Then I start with just using my 2 channel system for the audio, and hear what I hear.  Like MC said.  The screen would only be down to interfere with the sonics when I...
Opinion on audio note kit dac 5.1 or 4.1
It is a great hobby all life long.  At 30 I had Vandersteen 2C's with some Counterpoint gear and a SOTA Deluxe Star with SME V tt as the only source.  It's been a joy the whole way to my early 60's.  I just kept plowing about $3k - $4k in my sys...
Opinion on audio note kit dac 5.1 or 4.1
The Big 7 at its retail, I don't know.  I sold mine for only half of what I paid after two years, as digital depreciates fast.  Now, used, sure!I am running the RK 300B's, and have PX4's, Psvane WE101D "replicas", and KR T-100's to try, as well.  ...
Opinion on audio note kit dac 5.1 or 4.1
I have never heard the 5.1, so I can't comment on that.Maybe it's the DHT tubes, but regardless, all Lampi's I have owned present a large, fairly 3D soundstage.  As I went up their range of DAC's, the stage got a little bigger, but the biggest dif...
Opinion on audio note kit dac 5.1 or 4.1
I find that a Bendix 5852 Redbank manufacture is the primo rectifier in the ANK DAC.  Just more of everything compared to the tube supplied with the kit.  And I run Philips JAN 5687WE's, too.I hate to say it, but the Lampi Pacific is quite a bit b...
Opinion on audio note kit dac 5.1 or 4.1
I built an AN Kits 4.1LE some years back, subbing in some VH Audio Copper/Teflon caps.  It sounds much like others have described.  Decent detail, but certainly not digging in as deeply as my Lampi Pacific.  Warmer, rounder, kinder to the music - ...
The myth of "best" in audio needs to be addressed by all of us
@millercarbon   Ah, what's point...
Has anybody had any reliability issues with VAC amplifiers?
Yeah, I find your post's slant on VAC pretty surprising.  I've followed the audio hobby for decades and haven't encountered that sentiment before.  I have owned two VAC preamps and an amp and had no problems at all over the ~10 years of use.  I'm ...
Weiss medea plus and dsp 501 or lampizator golden gate?
I've owned the GG, and "lit up from within" is definitely true for it, but it is on the warmer side of things, and if your system leans that way already, it might not be the best match.  That said, the tube rolling aspect can let you "season to ta...
