ESL's to Monitors
Thanks guys. Priced most of these and they are out of my range new and I can't find any used. I did look into building my own Hybrid bookshelf speakers and figure I can do that for about a grand. Right now that might be my only option.
ESL's to Monitors
Thank you for all the responses. Many of these I will have to look up and I do have to keep the price down. One of the reasons I moved into a smaller place is that money is tight. Also, I live at least a 3 to 4 hour drive from any decent stereo sto...
ESL's to Monitors
I have not heard the new LS50's, but the reviews are good. I would like to spend no more than what I can sell the SL3's for, so around $800 seems about right. I have not heard or seen the Larsens for sale or heard them so I will have to look them up.
Does JBL get a bad rap?
Their powered studio monitors are wonderful and I have a number of friends in bands who use their professional stuff on stage(although those don't work as well in a home environment, I've tried)
Electrostatic versus conventional speakers
Proper room treatment will let you have them closer to the rear wall( ie-baffles or heavy drapes).
Best budget speakers for near-field/small space
Look for a pair of Spica T-50's on here. Great midrange with bass response down to 30hz in a small speaker and won't bust the bank. Another thing to look at would be a set of JBL monitor's. These are the standard for recording engineers in the stu...
Rebuilding old Sansui's
I am not expecting anything like what I have for my main system(Martin Logan SL3'S)but I built a pair of speakers years ago that sounded beautiful. I used Radio Shack speakers and crossovers and hand built a large cabinet patterned after Spica t-5...
Speaker cabinet made of real wood
I do not know of any personally other than the one pair I hand built 25 years ago but I can give you one good reason to own them. If you ding a veneer hard or it gets a deep scratch you have to replace the panel, where with solid wood you can sand...
Balanced vs Unbalanced?
My amps have not only separate connections but separate curcuits for rca's and XlR. You have to switch curcuits when changing between the two and the paperwork says that the amp must be turned off.
Basic Preamp - suggestions?
Look for a used Superphon.
Biamping with BAT vk200 and vk60?
I would be interested in the answer to this myself.Just from thinking about it you are going to be carrying a full signal on each output so the only thing stopping a full signal from getting thru would be the crossovers in your speakers. I don't k...
Amp Power Conditioner or not?
Excuse me , but I have to jump in here. I'm in a Power Technology course right now studying power transmission. An isolation transformer is what utility companies use to take the spikes out of the system. I didn't know they made small ones for the...
Amp Power Conditioner or not?
Another reason to use a power conditioner and the reason that I do is not to clean up the AC but to protect my system from spikes. I live in an area where the power gets knocked out at least 2 or 3 times every winter due to storms and when lines g...
Are tone controls worth a second look ?
There is an easy way to have the best of both worlds. simply buy a seperate 8 or 16 channel mixing board like live bands use and wire it in so you can use it or completely remove it from the curcuit. By the way, when you are listening to a recordi...
Making A Monoblock out of a VK-55
I always like it when atmasphere and almarg join in. Thanks for the info guys, its always enlightning when reply. I think more of what I was getting at is that isn't it better to have an amp that is designed as a monoblock than one that is paralle...
