Passive preamps - differences between technologies
@mrdecibel Thanks! I was under the impression that the input inpedance is the main factor to determine how friendly a power amp can be to a passive preamplifier. And also the output of a phono stage or a DAC..
Passive preamps - differences between technologies
Thanks for all the recommendations and sharing your experience.  Slightly added warmth/richness would be a lot more welcomed than any loss of dynamics.  Simply put, I'm wondering if it's worth it puchasing something like Music First Audio Classi...
Passive preamps - differences between technologies
@ozzy62 That's what I was looking at.. Hattor the Big with AMRT resistors. I was wondering if anyone compared it to Music First Baby Reference, from what I have read most of people prefered Baby Reference against ARC Ref5/6. Still, I imagine these...
Audio Research Reference 150 - buzzing input transformer
@atmasphere I still have the old transformer in a box over here - it seems there’s only one set of long bolts (at least those that could have been tightened). I have been running the amp opened with the new transformer - without the top cover. ...
Audio Research Reference 150 - buzzing input transformer
So the traf is finally replaced. I just had a first listen.  Does anyone know how hot the input transformer can get? I have left the cover off so I can touch the transformer. I guess it gets to about 80 degrees of Celsius after 2 hours. The outpu...
Audio Research Reference 150 - buzzing input transformer
The ARC REF150 manual says that the operation temperature is about 40 degrees of Celsius. Of course the tubes are much warmer but the chassis was always about that.
Audio Research Reference 150 - buzzing input transformer
@jetter I have even asked the ARC if they recommend using KT150's in this model. They said definitely yes. Not in REF110 though. I was planning to get a set of KT150's when these KT120's reach their limit.   I don't think this amp ever tasted KT1...
Audio Research Reference 150 - buzzing input transformer
@jetter Yes, we have split the new traf cost 50/50. We're not sure how that happened. It worked fine for several hours when plugged into a cheap Dynavox filter. Then I got a proper cable that reached the wall outlet and listened for the whole eve...
Audio Research Reference 150 - buzzing input transformer
Thanks, the transformer will be replaced soon.  I'm just thinking what kind of precautions I can take so it doesn't happen again. It was quite expensive, plus shipping, custom fees and mainly, it takes time.  I have a separated circuit for the l...
Audio Research Reference 150 - buzzing input transformer
If it's the presence of DC, it must have happened quickly with permanent damage on the transformer. After I took it to a friend's place, it behaved the same even after plugging it into a power plant. And it would be interesting if this was the onl...
Tube PHONO preamp interference - RFI, EMI, bad grounding?
Ok, solved it by now. (The selector for balanced or unbalanced in the back of the RCM is for the input, not the output.) Works fine with both RCA or XLR. Great phono stage. The new owner seems to have no issues with the EAR 834p. The interferenc...
Tube PHONO preamp interference - RFI, EMI, bad grounding?
The chain is TT - RCA / single ended, shielded with separate ground wire -> RCM phono -> XLR out -> preamp Could the problem be in the TT grounding? The whole system is plugged into one wall outlet.  Power amp plugged directly into the...
Tube PHONO preamp interference - RFI, EMI, bad grounding?
Hello again, I have sold the EAR phono preamp few weeks ago. It was replaced with RCM sensor 2 phono stage (solid state). It's a different story when it comes to the sound, there quite typical differences as in other tube vs. solid state compari...
Tube PHONO preamp interference - RFI, EMI, bad grounding?
Would you suggest trying to move resistor between the audio and the ground plug? While chassis > IEC would be connected directly. I’ll have to buy a new one. Will this work? - MBB02070C3329FCT00 (serial number of the resistor) - It was a Visha...
Tube PHONO preamp interference - RFI, EMI, bad grounding?
@dover I think If I wanted achieve the best shielding possible I'd have to leave the two green wires as they are but to cut out the 33ohm resistor. Then everything (the board, the chassis) would be grounded through the IEC with no resistance. I ma...
