JMLAB, QUAD OR THIEL.?
Between your three choices, and your associated equipment JM labs might be first/best choice. Theils are nice, but a bit difficult to drive and the Quad especially difficult (as unsound pointed out). If dynamic range is a priority and/or maybe dee...
The Worst Speaker you have ever heard.
I thought the wilsons were setup wrong myself, but the dealer told me dave wilson came and personnaly set them up himself--and if the designer can't setup his own speakers right then he probably can't design them right either. Regardless it makes ...
The Worst Speaker you have ever heard.
In addition to the df-661 there were/was the LD2,LD3, and possibly an LD1. I've heard the LD2--mixed emotions about'em. Cabinets like bricks though-you're right. There's better stuff today.
The Worst Speaker you have ever heard.
Wilson X-1 series I. The longest most boring one hour listening session ever. No cabinet resonances--can't complain there. But nothing really spectacular ever stood out. Soundstaging and imaging were only mediocre--my little Thiels did a better jo...
Tuner vs Satellite Radio
The one thing I didn't catch in reading the posts that you might want to consider is getting a big yagi style antennae (if you got the space) and depending on your location you should get lots of radio stations (like all major nearby cities and co...
Looking for recommendations to use Rives Audio ...
"Was it worth the expense?"You will have to evaluate your system and your future plans goals to know if the services are worth the expense as far as maximizing your system. E.g. if you've got a $1k pair of minimonitors (their basic analysis is lik...
Is it taboo to mod a speaker?
Everyone else has covered pretty well. The only mods I've done and would recommend to speakers is deadening the cabinets with "dynamat" equivalent. That one is usually an improvement with no downsides/tradeoffs. Changing a driver and doing it prop...
My question is about bi or triamping.
www.sound.au.com has some in the projects section. He only sells PCB's.
Simple "Q factor" explanation
A Q of .5 is better--lower tighter. .707 is maximally flat and more common. Its maximmaly flat because its the highest you can go without getting any resnonat peaks and getting the most hz extensions. Higher Q are less accurate. To get the Q lower...
A system under $1k an interesting link
I don't think that system would sound very good--there's good tubes and cheap bad tubes which is the WAV. The Tivoli is ugly for a hifi rig. The speakers are the only thing he chose I'm OK with, but alot of others here have listed better choices. ...
The Color Of Vinyl
Someone else out there would know for sure since I'm not a vinyl buff; but doesn't the needle move up and down in the grove for one channel of sound and then left and right (back and forth) in the groove for the other channel? The needle follows t...
Is this for real?
Is "demagnetize" the word this/these company(ies) really uses? And they're good for speakers? I could be wrong, but isn't it the electric signal from the amplifier what turns your speaker's voice coil into a constantly-varying-in-charge electromag...
Recommendation for REALLY inexpensive receiver
Avoid the digital amps--its Class D and not as good as Class A or B. And the "D" doesn't have anything to do with digital: its just marketing hype. Class D is an analog design (the next after class C) that goes back to 1928--predating digital itse...
Norh Speakers from Thailand: High-end or Hype??
I share you instincts/sentiment sunnyjim. I did for awhile think of buying some, but was wise and didn't. They called there little pyramid speaker with 4 3" Tangband drivers something like "one the best av loudspeakers of all." (go check the webpa...
how good is Dyna FM1?
http://www.avahifi.com/root/audio_basics/1990-11_fm3_keep_working.htmThe stock FM1 is mono. The multiplex module will make it stereo: equal to an FM3. The FM3 was stereo from stock. You might be better off just "restoring" it to new--I don't know ...
