30 Years, 5 Cities, Many Storms - Not One Failure
Just to pitch the other side of the coin... I was listening to my stereo when a lightning storm rolled in... I saw the bolt out of two different windows that were, respectively, on the south and east sides of my house. Took out the CATV box, fried...
iPod as a source 80 gig model, lossless
Metralla, make no mistake, I think the iPod is a fantastic bit of engineering. The fact that it makes respectable sound when played through a high end rig is pretty stunning. Just hard to compete with something like, say, the Spectral DAC mentione...
iPod as a source 80 gig model, lossless
Hmm... Seems to me there is confusion in this thread that may not be evident to all--the difference between an iPod as a source v. Apple Lossless as a source.Even with good cables and Apple Lossless files, I find the iPod a pretty terrible source-...
HDTV widescreen - Grey bars on side, not black?
What model TV and how is it connected? Where the bars are introduced may depend upon how the signal is being transmitted from the source. For example, there is SD material occasionally transmitted on HD channels, where the black bars are "supplied...
Plasma issues, is it worth it?
For another datapoint... I've got a Pio Elite 61" plasma and I get no buzzing... The HDMI also works fine with my Comcast CATV box--Comcast in my area uses Scientific Atlanta STBs (I want to say its an 8300HD). Can you put in drapes you could pull...
Feel let down by your audio software choice?
I swear foobar built a database. Like I said, its been a long time. I figured it was built like iTunes, which reads the information out of the tags into an XML database, then supplements the database with non-tag items like album art, last played,...
Dimmer noise
I wouldn't doubt it. But, I still feel like for the overwhelming majority of the US population, going CFL is appropriately "green." (As a side note, I gather Home Despot is giving CFLs away this w/e for earth day.)I would further note that ultimat...
Dimmer noise
Point taken, but its the distribution of the heat in a useful manner, not the production of the heat, that I believe accounts for the difference. I'll have to look at dimmers again and shop around. Getting the LV halogen dimmer was a special order...
How do you fix electromagnetic interference?
Have you done anything with respect to your power lines? That may be a place to start. Noise on the power lines can have a big effect, so trying a power filtration system (on both the DLP and the DVD) could go a long way.
Feel let down by your audio software choice?
I've actually switched over to Apple Lossless myself, but I gather that is pretty similar structurally to FLAC anyway. My fear with FLAC is the lack of external support--good user community, but the majors haven't thrown any weight behind it, so i...
Dimmer noise
@Eldartford--I'd be interested to know which kind of dimmers you use. The ones I've seen have all relied on fast switching. There are those that tend to switch off on the downside of the AC waveform that are supposed to be friendlier to certain ty...
Feel let down by your audio software choice?
Herman, Michael's right--there are some fields in wav files that can be used for tag data. But, it is completely nonstandard and won't translate.Michael, not sure whether you are on a Mac or PC platform. I'm guessing Mac, since you mentioned Apert...
Dimmer noise
Virtually all dimmers are build around SCRs and Triacs and what they do, in effect, is turn the switch on and off really, really fast. Since conventional incandescent lights have a filament that doesn't respond that fast, the filament sort of aver...
Where does a sellers responsibility stop?
Huh? First time poster reviving an unrelated 3.5 year old thread to ask a real estate question? What am I missing... April Fool's day was several weeks ago...
Shipping - Who's Resposible for Receipt of Item?
I started a thread like this a long time ago, and my ultimate conclusion was that unless otherwise agreed to, the risk of loss in shipping was with the seller. Anytime I sell anything, if the buyer isn't paying for shipping with signature service ...
