Ortofon SPU Cartridges
They should to sound warm and romantic ("tubelike"). In case of my SPU 85 Anniversary I find the sound is not overly warm or romantic. It is rather neutral with great speed and bass. Tracking is not so good though... I wonder though why there are ...
Single plinth for multiple table/motors
Hi, everyone is discussing about plinths. The bigger the better. Why such neurosis? Plinths are pretty to look at but do they really give much sonic improvement? Plinths could add colorations to the sound --> is that what you want?Chris
Turntable upgraditis
You can update a design to the latest technology or... you can go back in time and buy a Thorens TD-124, which also is an upgrade. So I agree with Grimace: new is not always better.Chris
What is the best analog sounding CD player $2000
Roy, if one says "analog", then I'm thinking of vinyl, analog tape recorder, VHS tape, etc. So analog is not only vinyl and analog like sound is not identical to vinyl like sound. Or am I wrong?Chris
OPamps still inferior to discrete circuits?
My limited experience with the OPA627 is indeed a bit laid back sound. It sounds clean and "transparent", but altogether it doesn't sound very engaging in the long term. I think a discrete layout (a well designed one of course) would give more har...
Micro Seiki RX-1500,3000,5000,8000 good or bad turntable?
Could you tell what kind of bearing and spindle/bushing construction the Micro-Seiki's have?Chris
The necessity of a plinth
Cones have the shape of the electrical symbol for a diode but this doesn't mean they act as (mechanical) diodes. Btw, why should mechanical devices act like electric devices and vice versa? Personally I think the mechanical diode theory is not a s...
OPamps still inferior to discrete circuits?
Kijanski, that is a funny phrase --> sometimes it is even true! But of course in general cars are much better now in terms of engineering and performance than those from 40 years ago. But with audio sometimes things from the past are better tha...
OPamps still inferior to discrete circuits?
Kijanki, I understand the technical difficulties of making discrete layouts and the costs that it will generate. But we are audiophiles and we are only interested in sound quality, not technical specifications. So do you think the best OPamps with...
The necessity of a plinth
Hi Lewm, the idea of dampening of spurious vibrations is a nice one, but you actually don't need high mass to accomplish this! What you need is a low impedance path for the redundant kinetic energy, which should have a constraint layer constructio...
Tracking ability SPU
Thomas, I did it with the small AS weight. Within the first 1/10th of a second the stylus got kicked out of the groove --> very scary.Chris
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Sometimes it is good to ventilate your anger or frustration Raul. I think this forum is a good place to do. I have to say that in spite of your "highly charged emotional state" (or perhaps I should rather say because of that) we still can learn a ...
Is analog & vinyl anoying? Is it worht it.
I played the Mobile Fidelity release of Bernard Herrmann's Fantasy Film World on 200 grams vinyl yesterday. Wow, that was the first time I heard a 200 grams vinyl release. Of course this was an audiophile release, so not only the quality of the vi...
Village Vanguard session with Bill Evans
Yes, I wish I could have met him too. He looked like a "nerd" at time of the interview (and at time of the classic Village Vanguard recordings) but what a genius he was! It wouldn't surprise me if he was already playing piano when he was six years...
Village Vanguard session with Bill Evans
Ghosthouse, thank you very much for the link. This is truly unbelievable. I'm flabbergasted. Bill was a genius, some kind of Mozart on the piano. Everything he played was a reflecting of his unconscious mind. This level of playing can't be learned...
