Audio research REF 5 SE / REF 40th Ann compared ?
I have the REF-5 (2100+ hours) and REF-5 SE (160+ hours) and they do sound different.To my ears, the immediately appreciable difference is that the SE sounds very together or "coherent". Instruments and sections in a band and orchestra just "feel"...

We have XPA-1s driving Thiel 3.7s. Upstream, a Bryston BCD-1 feeds an Audio Research REF-5. XPA-1 input gain is very high at 32db and the 3.7 has sensitivity at 90db and yet the speakers are dead silent when REF-5 is muted. With mute off, there is... 
Bryston BCD1 vs. Audio Research CD3 MkII
In my audio system, the BCD-1 completely outclass my 1999 CD2. The difference between the BCD-1 and CD2 is stunningly clear. To my ears, the BCD-1 beats CD3MKII and bettered the CD5. I have not heard CD7 nor CD8.The CD2 is 11 years old. Technology...
