could somebody help me out on the benefits of expensive phono and speaker cables?
The most obvious advantage is that they can help some people get rich quick. Best of all is that they won't need to present any evidence whatsoever of possible technical improvements over basic OFC. A fancy sleeve and ridiculously overkill plugs c...
Preferred Contact Cleaner and Contact Enhancer for Audio?
I have used De-Oxit by Caig. Can't say it made any discernible difference whatsoever. Lovely wine red colour though horrible smell and crap taste. Metal polish, Brasso etc, on the other hand did make a difference, (thinner, brighter, but not bette...
If you could only keep 5 record albums, what would they be?
I'm not really into albums, prefer to compile my own but it's funny how Abbey Road keeps coming up. It would be on my list too, along with the following Astral Weeks  Van MorrisonBorn to Run  Bruce SpringsteenLove and Theft  Bob Dylan Get Happy!! ...
Top resale value speakers
@ prof, thanks for those words. Yeah, it’s been a unsettling experience. Was on the phone for the umpteenth time with the insurers this morning and decided to cancel my claim. They really have little idea of loudspeakers, let alone vintage DCs and...
Top resale value speakers
@prof, oops, I missed the date, sorry. My audio sensibilities took a hit 3 weeks ago when my son pushed over one of my speakers and it sustained serious cone and slight cabinet damage. In fact, not just my audio outlook, I had to re-evaluate some o...
Top resale value speakers
Harbeths are another obvious candidate. No such thing as a cheap used Harbeth.Same goes for Sonus Faber, barring the entry level offerings. Exquisite cabinetry holds its value very well. There seems to be an obvious relationship between residual pr...
Best bookshelf speakers
@gsm18439  yes but it's kind of worrying that copies are still being produced today, not updates but exact copies as near as dammit. Was that famous 1970s midrange that good that it can't be improved upon even now?At least JBL claim to have updated...
Which band IS really America's Greatest (rock & roll band)?
The Doors are easily the best band from America for me, followed by the Velvets. Every album was different and brought something new. 50 years later the music remains timeless. Both bands seemed destined to self explode, but whilst they lasted tha...
Old vs. new
@chakster  The cutting engineer is indeed very important. Harry T Moss did some fabulous work with the Beatles original LPs. So far, I don't think anyone has quite matched him in their subsequent transfers. At least to my ears, there's something v...
Old vs. new
@phillyb  I agree, you just cannot generalise. More or less everyone agrees that CD or vinyl both fall short of the master tape, and there doesn't seem to be any easy way round this.Of course master tapes themselves can vary in quality in many ways.
... POORLY RECORDED SONGS THAT ...
@bdp24 some good inside information there. With the Beatles it's easy to forget that most instruments were regularly recorded in unique ways with speed variations and reverb used freely, eg the piano on Sexy Sadie.
... POORLY RECORDED SONGS THAT ...
Well, one classic example was Dylan's muddy sounding Street Legal album from 1978. It did get a much needed remix in the 90s, but even that doesn't sit well with everyone. The Mamas and Papas back catalogue suffers badly from too much 'bouncing dow...
How Many People Here Know About Lenehan Speakers
I've heard of them and became interested in their views regarding cabinet construction. All box speakers need to deal with cabinet resonances and the Lenehan approach made sense.
Which band IS really America's Greatest (rock & roll band)?
The key turning point for me was Buddy Holly. He took the mix of Blues and Country and created something new. Paradoxically, he sowed the seeds for the ultimate demise of Rock and Roll by laying the ground for what was to follow ie, the Beatles etc.
What's your favorite lyric from a song?
Following on from Warren Zeavon's Play It All Night Long, here's one of his I can never tire of,Werewolves of London"I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his handWalking through the streets of Soho in the rainHe was looking for the place called...
