Tube amps and iPods
Again with the troll thing Tvad? My major concern would be I've had capacitive discharges and stuff zap me putting my computer into tube pre's. I know Manley's not-quite-out-yet MantaRay is supposed to have an iPod (more gain maybe? grounded diffe...
Most involving and thrilling moviemusic?
For all of the Lynch films for that matter. Or as Frank Black would say:Got wasted, erased head
Most involving and thrilling moviemusic?
My favorite Philip Glass soundtrack is "Mishima". Everyone always says "The Mission" but "Killing Fields" (same director) is just as good. I think it's that it's so understated. Another one you wouldn't suspect: "Crazy/Beautiful".
WAF - Wife Acceptance Factor
This thread kind of bums me out actually - what's it like to have a spouse that doesn't like music? Or doesn't care about reproduction (if it's affordable)? It would be a deal breaker. It would be one thing to be talked into going on a fabulous va...
Most involving and thrilling moviemusic?
I had kind of randomly clicked through this list - it's so funny someone else picked "To Live and Die In LA". "Jackie Brown" as well on the Tarantino front. "Empire of the Sun", even though generally I hate John Williams, is a totally different so...
WAF - Wife Acceptance Factor
I've never had a problem with cats and tubes to get back to Viridian's point. But they do like to bake themselves in the heat of my KT88's.
Most involving and thrilling moviemusic?
Michael Mann's "Thief" soundtrack by Tangerine Dream is a much overlooked one, and their other film score for "Legend" is equally good. "Alien 3". But my pick for all time greatest original soundtrack is surprisingly "To Live and Die In LA" by of ...
What equipment do you most regret parting with??
Had a great pair of Dutch speakers that were a hand me down from my grandfather. I got them when he died, and when they went south after a twenty year lifespan, I was truly bummed.
Alternatives to the Paradigm S4?
I like Arcam. No slouching from the FMJ's whatsoever.
Alternatives to the Paradigm S4?
I have heard so many people reference that Geddes book, I must read it. There are also so many myths about speakers in particular, so much sales double speak, and so many issues that have as much to do with construction as what's used in the wave ...
Alternatives to the Paradigm S4?
Excellent post my man... My car has B(l)ose. I hate it. Hey, got any thoughts on speakers? My M20/M22 fixation seems to be born out by your ceramics/Faraday rings thoughts. I had always assumed it was a strength issue, but actually the flux heat t...
Alternatives to the Paradigm S4?
More powerful magnets = more accurate sound in theory. Not concerned about the so-called Revel power issue. This is one of these "I heard on the internet one time..." kind of statements. Heard them with 20 tube watts, powered by Manley, Heard them...
Two amps, one pure class A, other A/B
It depends if one's a Carver from the 80's in Class A, and one's a set Marantz Mono's in AB, I'd go with the Marantz. It all depends. A/B is the ultralinear circuit, which has slightly lower losses and higher power. Class A has slightly less effic...
Tube dacs $2k
What about a used Bel Canto 1 or 2 with a Msucial Fidelity tube stage. You might save money and get better sound even with the interconnect.
How much does your system retail for?
I have a used turntable. It's a Spacedeck. But man, don't be so down on your system. I really like Arcam's. And a $2000 system is more than I ever thought I would spend on something I dearly love - music and my listening tools.
