Tell about your experience with your old Audio-Technica SL-1200s..
Chakster wrote "If you personally can afford $15k turntable it’s fine, but in my opinion this is way too expensive for any turntable."We can all learn how to do a better job of editing.  The sentence above is all you needed to say.  Interestingly...

Chakster, I am not going to debate with you, but I think your lens is broken, or perhaps it is that you are looking at things from a distant land.  A reasonable comparison here in the USA would be a Technics SL1000R, which retails for a bit over $...

Off topic, but Chakster asked what motor is used in the VPI HW40.  Brushless Direct ThinGap motor, manufactured by ThinGap LLC of Ventura, California.  This is a world class motor.  For those who might be interested let me share some additional e...

For the record the VPI HW40 is also a direct drive turntable.  With that said, direct drive or belt drive in high level turntables is not a big difference anymore.  I would not encourage anyone to base a decision based on turntable drive mechanism...

Chakster you are correct, but let's put this into perspective even more.  An SL1200MkII with a full complement of KAB modifications and adjusted for inflation is probably comparable to at least any $1500 turntable on the current market.  It is sti...
Stylus Wear Question
I have been away for a while and am sorry that I missed this discussion last week.  I have a Wild-Herrbrugg M5 microscope, (actually I also have an M3), and use it religiously to check for wear on my stylii.  Wild-Herrbrugg has been absorbed into ...

I had a fully KAB modified SL1200 Mk II and it was a very satisfactory turntable in every way.   When introduced, I bought an SL1200GAE and the two sat side by side for perhaps 6 months, one set up for mono and the other for stereo.  The GAE is so...
Palm Beach Area Record Stores
I live here in WPB, collect vinyl, but can't say that the local record store scene excites me.  Rust & Wax is the only one on your list that I have purchased from.  My interest is jazz.  Selection here is limited at least for that genre, price...
Vinyl guy seeking recommendation for a top level cd player
Thanks again to one and all.  I will report back once I take possession of the D10X and get some time with it.  In the end I think it came down to a choice between the Ken Ishiwata (Marantz) voicing, which tends toward lush mids and highs and more...

This thread has been extremely helpful.  Thank you all.  I ordered a Luxman D10X today and I did so with confidence that would not have been possible without the input from this discussion.
Vinyl guy seeking recommendation for a top level cd player
There are a couple of things I don't want:  Any kind of a computer integrated directly into my sound system or any other kind of an Erector Set of subcomponents such as disc drive, DAC and clock just to play silver discs.  I view this as a seconda...

Is a Ortofon Black a step down from a Pickering XSV 3000
This is great stuff! Dear friends: This is very interesting: Effective mass -- the smaller, the better: 0.970mg Shure "bi-radial" (0.4x0.7mil, MM)0.750mg Ortofon X1-MCP (p-mount, high output MC)0.500mg Ortofon OM10 stylus (bushed elliptical, MI)0....
Gimbal vs unipivot tonearms
In my opinion either can be excellent.  In general gimbal is more expensive to make to achieve the same performance as an equivalent performing unipivot.  Also, most people find gimbal to be more comfortable to use, whereas there is more of a lear...
What phono preamp are you using?
