Russian Tube Preamp, No Return, Here I go again
I'm unsure about the meaning of "The power supply is linear, designed for the primary voltage 220V, frequency 50Hz Perhaps under the order another voltage", mentioned twice - does that mean you had the option of requesting another voltage?  Well, ...
Which speakers did you find bright, fatiguing or just disappointing in some way?
First off, I tend to gravitate towards speakers with an emphasized top end, but end up regretting it after sustained listening after higher volumes. - above 70 dB. The older Boston Acoustics - A100, A150 - could fatigue my ears in a second if cran...
Audio Lessons Learned - post your best advice for the newer members!
1.) Buy from a dealer in your own country, so if you have issues, it will be easier to get them resolved.2.) Make sure you have the money to pay for it - just don't make it another charge you put on an overextended credit card.3.) Don't be conditi...
Has anybody bought or heard a Chinese knock off amplifier?
Short response: if it breaks or comes to you nonfunctional, will you be able to say "Oh well", and throw it away or try to fix it yourself?Long response:There are some really good Chinese products, but if you have an issue or your component breaks...
What are you streaming tonight?
Qobuz - my go-to albums are Diana Krall "Live in Paris" and Alison Krauss + Union Station "Live".  If I'm trying to work out an issue or trying to readjust something, these are where I go first; they immediately give me an idea of how the system s...
Craigslist Fraud
Many good tips; scammers are preying on people who they think are desperate to get cash now because of the pandemic.  I've seen suggestions to use a police department/fire department/library parking lot or any place where there's a lot of pedestri...
Point of higher priced streamer?
Unexpected result I ran into - I'm running what I'd call a modest system, all separates, about 10k maybe if bought when brand new.  I picked up a Node 2 because I'd never had a dedicated streamer except for my laptop/Audrivana setup.  I thought th...
Paul McCartney 3
The snippets I heard on Sunday morning interested me somewhat so I'll probably give it a listen, but nothing since his Wings days really keep my interest for long.  Maybe it's my internal fuddy-duddy showing.  The Beatles and Wings era is kinda lo...
Whats your favourite track to play to the non hi-fi visitor?
"Right Time of the Night" by Jennifer Warnes.  I second The Carpenters, Steely Dan's "Aja" or "Babylon Sisters".  It really depends what your guest is familiar with - you need to engage them with music they like - non-audiophiles are not necessari...
What’s the best DAC match for the Cambridge Audio CXC original or V2?
Had the Schiit Modi 2 (with a 4490 chip board upgrade, not the Multibit), and an Oppo BDP-103.  Got rid of the Modi and changed out to a PS Audio Stellar DAC preamp, which improved the Oppo a bit (was still using its internal DAC, however), but ...
Advice on CD transport
Yep: also recommend the Cambridge CXC transport - it has a very good disc drive.  It won't read anything but Redbook CD's however, so no SACD's allowed.  There's no real performance difference between the CXC version 1 and the CXC V2, I've read.  ...
I was going to give my son a system, with brand new Solid Steel rack but he has AirPods???
What, did I take a wrong turn and end up in the "Ask Amy" blog? :)No, it's the age-old situation of buying something for someone that they didn't want, which usually means you 1.) didn't pay enough attention to their preferences and/or 2.) you're ...
My pet peeve: "revealing" speakers
Good point that I didn't really think about, that what is revealed in a "revealing" speaker could be more of a focus on certain frequencies as opposed to an overall statement of quality.  As a teenager who bought low quality stuff bought in the 70...
"Bridge Over Trouble Water" sounds artificial
Yes, that's an unwelcome (and unexpected) result of having a highly (or even just modestly) resolving system.  Sometimes it reveals some hidden gems of detail that you never paid attention to before, but it also can shine a spotlight on the warts....
Anyone else have issues with their CD player/transport not playing slightly damaged CD's?
Thanks for all of the suggestions and your experiences.  It is a few years old, one of the first version and not the second. I have a CD cleaner coming but if I get some spare time I will open it up, and use a soft brush to clean the lens.  If I s...
