Why bookshelf type speakers are not high end
Mrdecibel wrote: " very much appreciate the post above by duke, " Being an audiophile means......". Very well put into simplistic words."  Thank you very much! Among other things I had written: "It means continuing to learning things, sometimes th...
Why bookshelf type speakers are not high end
Kenjit wrote: "I thought being an audiophile meant aiming for the highest possible level and always trying to go even higher." Nope. What you have described is a sure-fire recipe for ruining your life. It sounds like something from an overzealous m...
Why bookshelf type speakers are not high end
Kenjit wrote: "If you want high end sound, you need perfect bass down to 20 Hz." Soix responded: "I’ve never heard that said by anyone, anywhere." Nor have I. Kenjit, I do not think "perfect bass" is even possible from a home audio system. Do you?...
Searching for matching(?) Subwoofer solution
"So for those of you enjoying your DBA systems, any suggestions on creative speaker cable management?"  You can use 16 gauge zip cord, make the wires as long as necessary to hug the walls if that helps, and you can run ’em under rugs.
Looking for a sub to put in my amps loop function
" Is there a way to set a subwoofer up to stop the nova from amplifying 80Hz and below and still be controlled by the novas volume control."Yes, by using the Vandersteen subs with the setup procedure imhififan linked to.  The filter slopes are sh...
Looking for a sub to put in my amps loop function
Imhififan, If I understand correctly, the Vandersteen hookup puts a 6dB highpass filter into the loop, and then the sub is AFTER the loop, and receives a speaker-level signal. The sub’s internal lowpass filter is the inverse of that 6 dB highpass ...

"Hi Duke, intentional diffraction isn’t always a bad thing... I never saw irregularities like odd harmonics on tone tests..." Diffraction doesn’t show up as odd harmonics; rather, the spectrum of the diffracted signal would be a significantly dist...
Looking for a sub to put in my amps loop function
Maybe I’m missing something, but is the loop on your Peachtree before or after the volume control?  If before, then whatever component is connected in the loop won’t have its volume controlled by the Peachtree’s main volume control. If this is the...
Is flat frequency response a hoax?
"Can anyone provide the name of a speaker company that claims ‘ruler-flat’ frequency response?" Neumann studio monitors come to mind. See data for the KH-420: https://en-de.neumann.com/kh-420#technical-data   Duke
Is flat frequency response a hoax?
Given that imperfection in replicating a live performance from a recording is inevitable, one might ask what the next best thing would be, within whatever constraints are imposed. And, what yardstick should we use to evaluate how well we are doing...

"The former CD horn I mentioned is an Eminence APT-150s..." The APT-150 is a diffraction horn. See all those sharp angles? They deliberately cause diffraction, which is used to widen the radiation pattern particularly at high frequencies, hence th...
Is flat frequency response a hoax?
"What you need is a speaker that is tuned to your ears not a flat response." If you’re so smart, then do it! Buy a speaker and DSP-tune it to your ears! What is stopping you? I’m dead serious. What is your excuse for not even trying to solve the p...

" Doesn’t this also point to proper throat design? " Absolutely! Imo included in "proper throat design" is this: The exit angle of the compression driver should match the entry angle of the horn (to within a couple of degrees at least), otherwise ...

" speaking of a mathematically ideal curve, would the tractrix also be in the running? "I don't know, probably so but the math involved is beyond me, and I have only focused on constant directivity horns.   I have relied on the analyses of people...

Phusis wrote about "... the 1" exit BMS driver being high-passed only with a 1st-order slope..."Imo that's a big problem, especially if that first-order crossover is just a capacitor in series.  It will utterly fail to adequately attenuate the dri...
