Why do some amplifiers throw a bigger soundstage than others?
Why do some amplifiers throw a bigger soundstage than others? @rrm Two things: lack of phase shift and aural effects having to do with the 2nd and 3rd harmonics, the latter of which can make an amp seem more detailed and spacious.
Gallium Nitride GaN Class D Amplifiers
My question is, why? I do not think other amps are embellishing the sense of power and scale. I am wondering what it means that GaN is not accomplishing the same? Is it more accurate? Controlling the drivers too well?  The sound is as good as ...
Technics SL-1200GAE or VPI HW-40 or …?
I think to @pindac point, some do work…. and listening and experiment is how you reached your conclusions…..  @tomic601 A friend of mine (who now works at ARC and has been there 25 years or so) worked for about 10 years on a platter pad project...
What is the best 2A3 SET Amplifier?
I don’t see there are any corelation between them and the current designers or copiers. @edle The US was first to move away from SETs because superior technology appeared, developed in the US. Although SETs can be fun, they really don’t stand u...
How does a preamp die from sitting unused for a few months?
If the rectifier tube is burned out would the rest of the tubes and power indicator light light up, or would all electricity be stopped at the first tube (here I'm assuming the rectifier is the first tube)? @audiodwebe In a word, no. The tubes...
Minimum Power Needed to Drive Klipsch Cornwall IVs? - Considering Erhard_Audio Ray
@katokaelin Seriously, 2 Watts isn't going to work in your larger space although I'm sure the Decware will sound fine at lower volume levels. My speakers are 98dB and 16 Ohms; very easy to drive. My space is considerably smaller than yours and I ...
Why don't we tire of music?
I played in an orchestra for a number of years before, in and after college. What finally stopped me was Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, which took a few times of reiterating the same spot in the score until the violins got it right. Something snappe...
Minimum Power Needed to Drive Klipsch Cornwall IVs? - Considering Erhard_Audio Ray
@mlsstl If a PP amp was being considered, what you say just above would be correct- but with no headroom. SETs, as I mentioned earlier, need to be used such that you only use about 20-25% of full power if you really want to hear what the amp is al...
Minimum Power Needed to Drive Klipsch Cornwall IVs? - Considering Erhard_Audio Ray
Very interesting. If I decide to pass on the Ray I’ll likely go for Erhard-Audio’s Saturn, which is a 15W PP... @katokaelin Too bad there's not more information on their site- that amps sounds interesting! The cleaner the amp is, the more you'...
Minimum Power Needed to Drive Klipsch Cornwall IVs? - Considering Erhard_Audio Ray
@katokaelin 4 Watts won't be enough to really fill that space. Here's another problem: if you want to really hear what an SET does, you really don't want to drive it past 20-25% of full power, else distortion causes the amplifier to sound 'dynami...
VPI Prime Sig/Lyra Delos / Feedback ...help!
Later that night at higher volumes I'm getting a midrange-low feedback @tommypenngotti Since this is volume related it leads me to think the turntable isn't well isolated from room/air -borne vibration. If it were me I'd be looking at things to...
Technics SL-1200GAE or VPI HW-40 or …?
@tomic601 The best platter pad we've head so far (most don't work at all) is made by Oracle. It has its own self-adhesive backing.
Technics SL-1200GAE or VPI HW-40 or …?
So, if you adopt the principle that the mat ought to transmit energy into the platter (I don't disagree), you then have to worry about isolating the bearing and any other sources of noise, like even that which can be transmitted by the belt from ...
Best investment; cartridge or line stage?
I think this is the wrong question! The reason is simple: the tonearm's ability to properly track the cartridge far outweighs what cartridge you have. The better the arm is at this, the less differences you'll hear between cartridges assuming the...
Need Guidance for Next/Last Pair of Speakers
If space is an issue, I’d consider using a set of Swarm subs made by Audiokinesis. The advantage here is that the subs are meant to be as close to the wall as possible and will give you 20Hz response without big peaks or nulls in the room. Then i...
