5 Dumb Things Audiophiles Believes.
@barryinseattle    I agree. While I seem to have a fairly forgiving hearing system that fits the standard engineering notions of what can and cannot be heard, I stop before insisting that nobody else can hear the things I can't. It's interesting...
Everything matter in the audio chain. Tests prove it!
If the ears aren’t convinced then the graphs and charts are telling us what we can’t hear or don’t notice as important to our enjoyment of the sound. That’s good information just as much as when the charts and graphs do correlate to what we like. ...
Does Equipment Break In, or Does Our Hearing Adjust?
Now that I think about it there are other possibilities besides just burn-in. Some components could conceivably change sound quality for better or worse over time whether used or not. Some could conceivably sound better after a burn in period, but...
Does Equipment Break In, or Does Our Hearing Adjust?
One way to know for sure with your sound bar would be to do before and after measurements. The apparent tonality change should readily show up on a frequency response graph if it was actually caused by physical changes in the sound bar’s performan...
Does Equipment Break In, or Does Our Hearing Adjust?
Agreeing with what other have said here, it is true that for some of us at least it’s our ears that do the vast majority of the breaking in. I’ve bought identical amps new and listened to them both at the start, and judged them to sound identical ...
Things I don‘t know
I’ll have to admit I can’t reliably tell if the polarity is reversed or not, at least not with music. My equipment does allow me to switch the polarity.
Everything matter in the audio chain. Tests prove it!
Thanks for sharing this. I've been complaining that no one does these kinds of tests, and alas here it is! The performances are quite similar but there's enough deviation there to suggest audibility. Anybody know how long the cable runs were?
Most underrated female recording artists..
Great thread! I've got some listening to do. One that I'll mention is Diane Schuur. I did a quick search here on Audiogon and found discussion so I'm not really confident in my complaint that she's underrated. I do find her voice to be exquisite a...
speaker impedance
Are there any high impedance speakers out there designed with tube amps in mind? I see you can get 16 ohm compression drivers. A couple of 8 ohm woofers could be wired in series to give 16 ohm impedance. Doesn't seem to be a popular design choice.
Don’t over power condition!
My opinion: The Aurender unit should have adequate power conditioning built in to it to deal with any typical home AC power noise. If it needs an external power conditioner it should come with it or at least specify what is required.
My take on subjective vs. objective
@rvpiano What defines an advanced system? Complexity? Cost? Measurements? Subjective sound quality as perceived by a select set of listeners? I tend to think of an advanced system as one that employs sophisticated techniques, such as more speake...
Don’t fight your speakers.
@curiousjim  I agree a good room is a good start. It's gets a little complicated though because rooms can be treated and some speakers work better in some rooms than others. So a good room and a good speaker that's well suited to that room with a...
My take on subjective vs. objective
@ghdprentice    You are correct! My ears can be quite sensitive to nuance and the whole of my ears and brain together can be quite discerning at times, for instance hearing distortion that my analyzer software has mistaken for background noise, ...
My take on subjective vs. objective
@ghdprentice  I'm totally with you about how measured parameters can fail to predict my perception of sonic outputs during sighted listening. My  theory is that my hearing perception can be heavily influenced by various factors other than the act...
My take on subjective vs. objective
@djones51 I would imagine the goal with electronics is to make them consistent enough that DB differentiation is not possible for even those with the best ability to discern. It seems like it could be possible with those kind of devices, unlike ...
