Phono stage hiss from BOTH SS and Tube Normal?
HiI am running a 47Lab (Miyabi) Phonocube, solid state "with a quirk", into Pass gain stages. No hiss or other spuriae. Nice sound too, from Carly to Floyd. Yow!cheers apo
pass labs x0.2 "pro's and cons's"
I am pleased to own an X0.2. It drove a McCormack well, and it drives my "older'n dirt" X150 very well, and with the X350.5 ... I don't see myself ever upgrading again.Audio is subjective. The way we hear is subjective, *For me*, I have foound a w...
Does it make sense to go for Pass 0.2 ?
I have used Pass X2 (original) and X0.2 with both X150 and X350.5. X0.2 is noticeably but not earth-shatteringly cleaner and quieter. Both preamps paste a big grin on my face, and the X150 still rocks big-time. Of course, X0.2 + X350.5 is "the" co...
Where to buy racks?
try antique shops near Spanish monasteries-make sure the chains are good and the cuffs lock!cheers apo
Is it best to leave gear on or to shut it off?
Some gear has no on/off. My Pass preamp is one such - to turn unit off, pull plug. My amp I keep in Standby. My digital stuff draws about 10W a box; it stays on for convenience's sake. I turn thr transport off. My phono stage is like the preamp: p...
Stand out phono stages
The Zanden is set with a gain of about 34dB. It was designed for the higher output of mm cartridges. Mike Fremer used it to good effect with low-output mc units by adding a step-up transformer. IIRCcheers apo
Considering going Vinyl--Please talk me out of it
In my subjective opinion, all the talk about if and how one can make CD sound better than vinyl is a bit of a blind alley. If I may invoke a crude metaphor: CD is like an electric space heater whereas vinyl is like a fireplace. They both do pretty...
Considering going Vinyl--Please talk me out of it
Vinyl has elevated my audio bug from "an expensive pastime" to "a ruinously expensive hobby". Come to the Broke Side, Luke...Having two different kinds of source, different but equal imo, has more than doubled the fun factor of the rig. The pix ap...
What started you on the merry go round?
In '86, Blushing Bride and I decided to assemble a sterteo that was more "to the point" thann the $1000-2000 "component systems" then gracing the department stores. (You remember the ones - all the woofers pushed in by young punks). At one store, ...
Stand out phono stages
Pedrillo, the closest I've heard (of) as the be-all, end-all phono stage would be the Boulder 2008. Better hock the Bugatti though. Vendetta Research ( of CTC Blowtorch fame) have received rave reviews.cheers apo
Stand out phono stages
Shsohis: sshhh! :)I have my eye on one such. Prices on them con=me and go in cycles it seems, and Smurf's Up. I'm waiting patiently for one with two full chassis at a good price. A month ago someone dumped one for $1500. I missed it by MINUTES!!ch...
Here's to YOU...
I've had the XAs fired up all night and used a (tipped) turntable as a rotisserie. Next year I'll rig the arm ti disoendse basting oil.The XAs will smell funny for weeks. Dog's gonna go nutzo. I'm sure Tboooe won't mind, and thanks for the "auditi...
Largest Impact - Arm or Cart?
I spent on a killer cartridge. I consider it money well spent. BUT the arm must be of reasonable quality: correct static and inertial mass, very easy motions around pivot(s). It becomes a bit of a black art. Example: I was strongly dissuaded from ...
Have you ever deceived your wife-audio purchase
Chadnliz, if my wife snookers me on issues as essentially harmless as my buying omigawd-priced gear, I'll squeeze an eye shut (hard to translate that expression - it connotes deliberately selective awareness) and let her have her fun her way. Two ...
Personal speaker evolution
Clbaudio:"Watt-Puupy"? Sounds like a bass integration problem. Repositioning or revising room acoustics should make'm sound less Puupy.(I realize that it is in dreadful form to jape on a typo. But I just couldn't resist. Punish me.):Magneplanar MG...
