Record Cleaning - Cartridge Damage
Has anyone tried lens paper? I know, sounds like another weird tweak, but think about it--if it's got what it takes to gently clean a lens, how would it work on a diamond tip. My experience has been--pretty good. You do need to be careful not to g...
Planar center channel w/conventional speakers
I've done it in a strange way. It was some time ago and I used 2 Martin Logan monoliths as a center channel (they were also the mains for my stereo listening). I then used Klipsch La Scalas as the main left / right for surround. As you can imagine...
What High End Manufacturers Could Learn From Bose
I met the VP of marketing for Bose at a party once. I told him I was into audio, but didn't tell him to what degree. To my surprise he pretty much said what you have said. Bose is a marketing company--not an audio company. Mind you, this was the V...
questions about the DVP S9000es
I bought the memorex music CD-R and CD-RW. Guess what--none of them work in my 9000ES. This came up in a previous forum, and we concluded, but never actually tested (I would have liked to), that my CD writer was the culprit. It's an HP CD writer p...
How many power conditioners do you own and use?
I have one. It's a dedicated 220V line with a step down toroidal transformer to 110V with balanced poles and 4 separate filters (each for 4 lines--analog, digital, projection TV, and amps). It's simple, cost effective, and gets the job done.
Where can I buy an infrared switch?
RAP is right. They used to sell 2035 IR which would have made things a little easier. But I went to their site, to find that it is no longer available. When I bought it they warned me that they lose their IR code. I've never had this problem and r...
How do you all store CDs?
I had a custom made cabinet made. The guy was in Pennsylvania. He made it out of mahogony. He can do most any kind of wood, but he only does natural finishes. The inside of the drawers were all maple. It holds around 1750 CDs. The rails are ball b...
Where can I buy an infrared switch?
Go to smarthome.com They have an infrared switch for 110V so you would have to get a 5 volt DC adaptor (radioshack should have one). Buy two switches and two adaptors. You can program the switches for any IR code.
Organ..
Saint Saens Symphony # 3. Classic Records re-issue on 45 RPM and King Super Analog Disc are both stellar recordings.
Component Video Cables
I'll second Better Cables. I had the Ultra. I sold it when I got a good deal on the AudioQuest YIQ4. The YIQ4 is a bit better--but not much, and certainly not worth the difference in cost. The Silver Serpent is better than the Ultra--I think it wo...
Stable Platter Transports
I've heard the Theta Pearl--it does use the stable platter and is very good sounding. Perhaps slightly on the warm side--but that's pretty subjective. I liked it very much.
Where to go with Direct TV satellite feed?
There are many ways to do what you want to do, but I would recommend the following:1. Hook the S-Video (or composite if there is no S-video) directly to the TV. This will give you the best picture.2. Hook the audio out (if you have digital and the...
Best Packaging in the Business
Levinson. Box within a box with several inches of foam in between. I've never tried it--but I'll bet it could withstand a 6 foot drop test. Someone put in Cary--At least my Cary was terrible. It was a box inside a box, but with no cushioning and f...
Atypical Q: Want Advice on Non-Prog DVD w/grt Vid
I have a Sony 9000ES. It is progressive but has an option for interlaced output (by a switch on the rear panel). Nice feature--particularly if upgrade your TV in the future and decide you do want progressive. This was also important to me, because...
Buzzing sound coming from my amp
Most low level buzzes are caused by a grounding problem of some sort. It is frequently caused by a ground loop (where there is a difference in the ground at two different points on the system which causes current--and buzzing on the ground). You c...
