@soix

update. I have Wharfedale Lintons set up currently. The Proacs were sold the day before I was able to go listen to them!! Aaahhh.
BUT Philharmonic just released a new tower speaker that measures @ 90db with dual 6.5” drivers that would seem to be a better fit for amp…

Any thoughts?

@mcpherson by new tower speakers, are you talking about the BMR HT speakers? AMT drivers, dual woofers? They have been out for a while and by all accnts, they seem to be great.

I have lots of experience with the regular BMR Towers. Owned them for 2 years. First thing first, they are exceptional for classical music. If this is your primary genre of music. You are in for a treat. There's a guy that compared the Phil BMR vs Revel 328Be and his experience reflects mine.

Part 1.

I'll continue with the negatives in part 2.

This is part 2.

If you are a beginner or intermediate listener, and want a pair of speakers that sound great. BMR is your guy.

If you're an advanced listener, you know your preference, and you know what sounds good and what doesn't, then read on.

The negatives about BMR towers. They are wide dispersion and interacts with the room a lot. You have to take care of your room treatments, especially true with these speakers. A rug on the floor is very important.

Regarding amplification, this was very tricky in my experience. The speakers respond incredibly well to tubes. But maybe it's the nature of the Ribbon tweeter (RAAL) it needs a lot of power otherwise the treble will sound subdued. But getting a lot of clean power from tubes is a challenge in itself.

If you get an amplifier that has more power than finesse. The midrange can sound dry, and it has a tendency to sound dry and a bit flat.

Again, these negatives only apply to advanced listeners.

FYI, these speakers were made and tuned using Val Alstine amplifiers. Never owned Van Alstine but they are great from what all that I've read.

@samureyex

new speaker is Cantibule rated at 90db. Also a Super BMR monitor

So with your experience with BMR tower..what amps did you try and do you think the Rogue Cronus magnum 3 is enough for the tower ? I think it actually measures a little easier to drive than monitor.

@mcpherson I wonder what's in those Super BMR to make it so expensive. $3,500 each. $7k for a pair. The HT towers have the same drivers and 2x the amount of the Purifi woofers and only $4500~

To answer your question. I tried a tube amp, 55 watts / channel. Lots of watts as far as tubes were concerned and that wasn't enough. It sounded marvelous but the tweeter wasn't getting enough power but it sounded subdued.

But like I said, the amp has to be really good in sound quality and has to be quite powerful. Idk how powerful the Rogue Magnum 3 is, 100 watts seem sufficient. I believe it would be a good match.

I don't have the BMR anymore, I only owned it for 2 years. ATM I have a Coda S5.5, the Coda is powerful and sounds sublime. I'm sure it would be a good match for the BMR too.
