Your favorite Mahler recordings on vinyl

Find the Solti/CSO offering on London/Decca for a riveting Symphony 2.  I find that I keep going back to that one.

Haitink, Concertgebow, Symphony #4. It was back in the 1970’s. I’d never heard Mahler and I wasn’t very interested in exploring his stuff. I was in my twenties. This performance showed up on the radio, one evening. I caught it during the Third Movement. It was my first encounter with Mahler. I listened all the way to the end. Elly Ameling’s vocal performance in the final movement was not only utterly lovely, it turned me into a fan of classical vocal music. One of the key moments in my listening experience.


Des Knaben Wunderhorn. Vanguard Records. Maureen Forester and Heinz Rehfuss vocals. Maybe my favorite record in my 1000+ pop/jazz/classical collection.

I love that Vanguard Wunderhorn LP.  Wore out my first copy.  Managed to find a near mint copy on EBay.
I also second the Haitink/Ameling 4th.
The 9th with Barbirolli and the Berlin Philharmonic on EMI/Angel is great, musically and sonically.
I first got to know the 9th and Mahler for that matter on a wonderfully sounding performance by Kondrashin, of all people, also on Angel.  Evidently he was a Russian Mahler specialist.

I am a bit of a Mahler hobbyist and I find myself in agreement with @edgewear above — with a few additions:
No2 - additional: Klemperer / Concertgebouw, (EMI live)
No4: definitely Klemperer!
No5-6: definitely Barbirolli (maybe 6 with Solti) -- unbeatable passion!
No8: additional: Horenstein (BBC classics)
No9: additional Bernstein / Berliner (DG live)
Das Lied: definitely B Walter / K Ferrier, Vienna Symph (Decca) Ferrier had been diagnosed with breast cancer (of which she died 1 yr later); she sings her heart out. A monumental performance!

Yes, of course Das Lied with Ferrier and Walter on decca is indispensable. How could I overlook it? But it's in mono, so sonics are somewhat limited. As for that live Bernstein one-off with the BPO on DGG: I didn't mention it because I have this on CD and didn't know it was also issued on vinyl. It's a 'must have' performance for sure, whatever the format. Bernstein's later DGG live cycle (with NYPO, VPO and CGOA) has some great performances as well, notably no. 6 and 7. These were originally issued on vinyl as well as CD. They're digital recordings, which is why I have them on CD. 

I have two pressings of the Horenstein Mahler 3rd.  The Unicorn pressing is flawless but oddly eq'ed and a bit lifeless.  The Nonesuch pressing is sometimes noisy and the center hole of one of the discs ain't exactly on center but string tone can be gorgeous.  Bottom line, the Nonesuch is my go-to choice.

I have the Nonesuch version.  A little oddly balanced in the string section, It sounds great though, and yes, a little noisy.

Agree with the Solti No. 2 and the Klemperer No. 4.  That Klemperer is a favorite of mine. You can get both of them as reissues these days, I believe (mine are reissues).

I really do appreciate all recommendations you have all have made, thank you now I have something to go on.
