You know you're an audiophile if--

You just got a pair of speakers you can barely move yourself (inverse proportionality with age probably too)

The first house you bought cost less than your current stereo investment (ditto)

You have boxes of cables with which you don't know what to do

A melomane is one who is in love with music. It is from French, although I'm sure it is in the OED.

Your wife tells you she is filling for divorce and you next thought is
"far out, now I can have my system cranked 24/7."
1. You have to sneak in the new piece of equipment so your wife/partner does not say "is that a new ....?"

2. You can only replace your $3k power conditioner with a $10k power conditioner because they have identical faceplate so your wife/partner does not know you have just blown your month's paycheck on the upgrade.

3. You start shopping at Wal-Mart so you can save for a new upgrade.

4. You have a tube amp next to bed so you can see the bulbs glow to fall asleep.

I have been thinking of this idea...What do you think of this idea?
Have a closet (no doors) with shelves full of junk equipment (bought from Goodwill and craigslist), bring home a new piece to add to the shelf. One day I make announcement after dinner that I am going to try out an old piece from the closet in your current set-up.
You see a photo of a hot naked woman in front of some gear and you spend all your time trying to figure out what gear it is.
You FINALLY have everything just right & the first song you play(one you've heard a hundred times) sounds so bad that you spend several hours trying to track down the problem only to realize that horrible sound is an instrument in the recording that you've never heard before.
Distracting thoughts that enter your mind while driving are about some new cables or accessory you're trying to get a hold of...
When you agree with WAY too many points mentioned previously in this thread.

When you would rather participate in forums like this rather than check your fantasy team or social networking site(s).
You find yourself in a plaza that has a Best Buy or some other 'Stereo in a Box' store and you either:
a) are tempted go in;
b) scoff and smile while driving away but wish you had went in;
or
c) actually go in to see if they finally got something that could meet your snobbish tastes, but walk out quickly with an approaching salesperson after you are noticed milling about in the 'high end' section...

....and you actually found some stuff that would be 'good' for your 2nd bedroom system if you had the money or impulses of your youth...
find yourself lying in bed unable to sleep thinking "have i isolated all my cables from vibration when i was crossing them at right angles?"
Hello, my name is Wade and I'm an audiophile.... if I stop listening to my music and get rid of my system will I still be an audiophile? Once an audiophile, always an audiophile?
Abucktwoeighty-it is just like Alcoholism and Smoking.
You may stop listening to Music and get rid of your
System. If you set one foot in a High End Store, it will
start up all over again right where you left off. It will be like you never quit! I know from personal experience.
This is the third time that I have fallen off of the
Wagon.
i am in deep denial. no amount of negative consequences throw up yellow much less red lights. family interventions don,t work as i have my lawyer on speed dial to speed up my release from detox facilities. since there are no hifi stores within a 2 hour drive i am going to walmart right now just to look at the hdmi cables that i don,t even need. this post is a cry for help. how pathetic ha
Hotmailjbc-This Post isn't a cry for help. It is supposed
to be a humorous view of self reflection of the Audiophile
Hobby. These Statements are supposed to be over the top as
excessive exaggerations, no relation to reality-pathetic
or not! My Reference to Audiophilia as an obsession, like
smoking or alchoholism, is an exaggeration. Point wasn't
to insult those with serious smoking/alcohol problems, but to exaggerate the obsessiveness of Audiophilia by comparison. Pathetic is ruining a simple Joke, by having to explain it. There is nothing else pathetic here, because
none of it is real. It is all an exaggeration. You are
aware that this is simply an exercise-Right? Say, "Now
you do"!
dear peety officer... here we go again,,,,,,you think your exaggeration is ok but mine is not? don,t even start with me.
Hotmailjbc-and where is the punchline in "Pathetic"? You
get alot of laughs calling the Audience "Pathetic" in
stand up comedy? It is not an exaggeration, it is a reversal, and it is pathetic. Pathetic is a snide remark,
see how I used it? Nothing humorous about it. These entries are self inspection, or self deppreciation. Your
comment applies to everyone else, but you. I am not offended, I don't really even care! It is just the anti-thesis of humor-it just isn't funny. Sorry if you take that
personnal, wasn't meant to be. My use of Pathetic, at the
beginning of this Entry, is just to show the lack of humor.
Again, nothing personnal. Exaggeration won't change that.
Doesn't matter whose exaggeration it is, it is how it is used.
as galsworthy wrote , i'm sure you have no clue to who he is, the word can be used as a a plea for help. fits you perfectly. go find some customer service
You know you're an audiophile...When you pursue the highest fidelity possible within your budget.
Go find some Customer Service in PC Audio-now THAT was
funny! I got one, how about if I look for some CONVENIENCE
to go with that Customer Service? How about if I look for
some Customer Service from a PC Audio Manufacturer RATHER than from another PC Audio Customer? Your killing me-Hotmailjbc! Who says that PC Audio Lunatics have no sense of humor? "Take my Wife, my PC Audio Customer Service, and loads of my own Money-PLEASE"! I will even pay PC Audio
Manufacturer to take all of them off of my hands, because I am a Loony Toons PC Audio Lunatic! I will arbitrate any
Labor dispute negotiations, any takers? I make such a good
Defense Attorney, I will even go to Jail with you for a
very-very-very long time! I promise!
You know you're an audiophile, when you save every month for your next upgrade...and think every night on which pieces of gear to buy.
You report off sick from work for the day because the system doesnt seem quite right and you need to dial in the soundstage.
I prefer the term "audiophiliac" to "audiophile" because it suggests a chronic condition.
Audiophiliac- unrealistic fear of Audio Equipment.
Audiophile- unrealistic lack of fear around smoking Audio
Equipment. Typically characterized by charred black carbon
covering Audiophiles face. "I like the smell of a smoked
Amplifier in the morning. It reminds me of......the last
scene in THE RIGHT STUFF"!
As long as sqeakiest wheel gets all of the grease, Wagon is
rolling along just fine. I think that it is past due for
me to get involved in DIY. Time to get hands dirty, smoke
a few Amps, and learn something for a change! Paying someone else a real big hunk of change to enjoy all of
that fun-NUTS!
You think live music events aren't true to the recording and don't sound 'open' and 'musical' compared to your system.
u can't listen to music in a car or if conversing w/ someone or in mono or in the daytime.
You sit for hours in infinite bliss listening to music just to hear what might happen next while all your ADD friends are out twittering.
you spend an excessive amount of time, listening to music, buying and selling components, and talking about the hobby.

what constitutes "excessive" is determined by a panel of psychiatrists or psychologists.

the hobby can be a disease if one neglects other important activities of living.
If your friend or family member ( mostly much juniors in age ) casually ask you to help them with a tip to improve their 2ch audio system set up ( with a very modest budget in mind ) and you keep explaining to him/her all about the sound quality and the equipments matching , till the person who asked gets emmensely bored and almost regrets asking you.

No, that makes you an ahole.
If your wife has no trunk for groceries, every room in the house has a stereo (including bathroom's), and I have a dedicated room just for audio! Not to mention I get some of my best sleep with bands like Tool (heavy metal) playing at 120db in my room.

Even my cat climbs into the ports of my sub boxes and takes a nap..... with music at volume. My son is 10 yrs old and constantly changes the setup I gave him for his room. My 5 yr old daughter, huh, I don't even want to get into that.

Or maybe it's because I have eight 12" subs, four 8" subs, and six 6" subs on bass alone. Add to that a total of eleven 6"mid-bass/mid range drivers and eleven tweeters. Four amps (three for bass alone), a custom built room with walls that are held in compression (anti-vibration), bracing on the ceiling, a concrete floor, dedicated power supply, ample diffusion, and I don't know what else to mention. Oh! Neighbors that don't complain no matter the hour!
you say out loud stroking your tube amp, "Isn't SHE beautiful! SHE never complains."...in front of your girlfriend.
When you decide to use your child's bottle sterilizer to help break-in power cords. I found Shunyata Venom 3S power cords fit in perfectly on an Avent sterilizer. Since it is run mutliple times a day 7 days a week I put the Shunyata in place of the stock cord while I'm re-doing my whole system.
given all of the myriad options available to you on the Internet, you are on an 'audio chat group' at past midnight. And think some of the pictures of gear are really, really fun to look at.
you rule out certain homes, while house-hunting, purely on the basis that they can't accommodate the needs of your system. (Non-Fiction).
I have a friend that dreamed he turned into a rather large 300b tube. He, my friends, is an audiophile.
