Why use a power receptacle at all?

Becasue I ran a separate power line to my system and have a 4" box serface mounted, I could wire directly to the power cords, eliminating the receptacle and male plug. Just install strain reliefs and wirenut or crimp the cords to the power line. Has anyone tried this?
