Why has Netflix gotten greedy?

I've greatly enjoyed renting DVD's from Netflix.com on occasion. But I don't have time to watch 4 movies a month (I like to get family and friends together to watch, and NONE OF US can spare that much time every month). I watch broadcast TV, and I go to movies in the theater. AND I LISTEN TO A HELLUVA LOT OF MUSIC on my stereo. The $16 per month "Marquee Program" is just a gimmick to get all of us who've enjoyed renting periodically to pay a flat rate every month, like cable or DSS. They're now closing their business to those of us who would rent 4 or 5 movies at times when we had the time to watch, and then go 2 or 3 months without renting any. THIS IS CONSPICUOUS SCREWING OF THE CONSUMER, and I say: IS THERE ANOTHER GOOD PLACE ONLINE TO RENT DVD'S?? There definitely should be...

Have used Netflix many times before. Lots of titles and easy to use. But, got too many late fees even though dvd's were mailed back out the day after I received them. Was good site but now wants the "guaranteed" money of the Marquee program. They emailed me when they were going to start the program and I told them, hey, I already got 50 dvd's at home; why would I use the Marquee program? To whomever else replies to this query, please let us know how many dvd's you have at home. I bet the average is about 50. I got about 100 now. Been trying not buying them but I can't!
I only own 20 titles, and don't feel that has anything to do with it. They're not like music, where you can listen over and over again and never get enough. You can't watch any movie over and over again, without getting very tired and bored with it. So, why buy them, unless the price is way low...like $4 a piece?? AT LEAST WE AGREE THAT NETFLIX IS FULL OF $#!+...
I've been using the Neflix Marquee plan for a couple of months now and think it's awesome. Each to their own ... Personally, $16 dollars per month to rent all of the viedos I can watch is a great deal ... no late fees, no special trips to the Video store, I love it. Dave C
Yes, to each his own. But it's still a rip off if you don't spend ALL your free time watching movies at home!
I'VE BEEN RENTING FROM NETFLIX FOR A VERY SHORT TIME. SO FAR THE SERVICE HAS BEEN GREAT. I OWN ONLY 10 DVDS AND THEY ARE MOVIES I CONSIDER WORTH WATCHING MORE THAN ONCE. IF I START TO HAVE PROBLEMS I'LL POST ON THIS SITE.
I'm interested in hearing from everyone who's used Netflix, for sure. Thank you.
I agree with the notion that $16 + tax is outrageous if your unable watch at least 5 movies a month. I tried it for almost three months and cancelled because it was too expensive for the amount of time I used them. They contacted me with a survey and I responded to them that the PRICE WAS NOT, I REPEAT NOT RIGHT. There are at least a dozen places here that rent for under $4.00 for 3day rentals. Don't try to rent a new release from NETFlix it's over $6 by the time you pay for everything . . . forget it. I won't be going back to them.
Hopefully they'll have an avalanche of online competition soon! Glad to hear that somebody agrees with me on here, about something...
I have used Netflix for about a year and I agree, the Marque program is far more expensive to the infrequent user, I stopped using them except for the free 8 rentals I seem to get from all my little nick nacks, from video cables to connectors I seem to buy. I never had late fees before this system, even though I used to keep some movies for two weeks! I'd need to rent/watch 5+ movies per month to equal the cost of the earlier packages, and let's face it,that's not always possible. It's too bad, I used to love them, now I'm unimpressed.
Thanks Kenny, we're in full agreement. I think they've changed management, or ownership, because they have a totally different attitude now. The last time I used them (before the Marquee bull dung), they tried to charge me a $.99 late fee (they were not returned late)! I got them to remove it, though. THEY'RE JUST OUT FOR EVERY BUCK THEY CAN SCREW YOU OUT OF, NOW...
I have the opposite problem from what most of you are saying. I watch 15 or 20 movies a month. the new Marquee program will only send out four and no others until you have send back those four. When i used to rent i would get 8 or 10 a week and return them within a week. It was great, for me the problem is having an upper limit of four dvds out at a time. i do agree tht they are now not very cooperative about when dvd get returned to them. it's part of capitalism, give them honey to lure them to a place and then change the groud rules once your there and less likely to go some where else.
Baiting and switching isn't part of capitalism, it's part of dishonest business practices.
I joined Netflix' Marquee program and am pleased with it. I love the convenience, and don't think $16 a month is unfair, given that I pay that much for my wife and I to go one movie a month. During the summer, when there is nothing but crap on TV, I will watch at least DVD movies a week, and sometimes more. Netflix is a business, and individuals who find it does not suit their viewing habits always have their local DVD rental store (after you get in the car, drive to the store, etc..............)
Nahh, they're just trying to screw me, that's all. Otherwise, they wouldn't force me to pay their minimum. None of my local video stores carry more than 150 titles, so that's not a consideration. NETFLIX NEEDS COMPETITION ON THE NET, and I hope I'm one of the first to rent from whoever that is. Hope it's in the next month or two...
Hey, it's a free market. If it doesn't work for you, well, so be it. I've been using the Marquee Program for about 4 months and overall I'm pleased with the service. There aren't too many movies I want to own. But, I like to have a few choices around when I find time to watch. So, for me the program works very well. The titles are shipped promptly and I am only about 50 miles away from their distribution center. Good selection, reasonable fees (IMO), and good service. When there's something better...
Yo Carl,if you are going to wine thru 9 replys mix some humor in there.Hire a writer if nesc.I never rented on line, but the store I rent from has changed some of the "spiffs" they used to have(rent2/3rd free)(used to be mon-thurs) I'm sure they have their share of inconciderates, scratch the discs, late returns,NO return at all,on and on.I guess living in a place where I have great renter choices I'm lucky.I spent an hr.or so reading an exchange you were in couple of days ago;and FUNNY!better than some movies I've rented(a lot of) I've only been at audiogon 1 wk today, aint watched any tv in (Lakers excepted)that time.I've died and gone to heaven And it is free.We got a great base of dif.opinions, dif knowledge levels.Ive bought a piece, and sold some cables already.Have offered what help I could 10,or more times. seen any of my replys?Don't forget the humor:this is fun,'audios' till next time
George, in starting this thread, I was complaining, and not in a humorous mood. I certainly am not in good humour all the time, and you "whining" about me not being funny enough doesn't encourage me, just heckles me. I'm fascinated that you've gotten so caught up in this forum, and I guess I should thank you for complimenting me about some of my previous exchanges. Perhaps if your tone were kinder (and if knew you meant you were laughing "with me" rather than "at me"), I would. I've seen a few of your posts, and I'm not sure how to take you yet. I'm sort of a lightening rod for personal attacks on here, and must cease being in them, in order to continue participating...
Yo carl_eber. THERE IS a site competing with Netflix, it's called cafe DVD, I think the URL is similar, I haven't joined them yet, but they have like 6000 DVD titles, and offer a package like Netflix used to. I unfortunately am stuck with netflix for a few more weeks as they won't refund partial months, even after I informed them that 3/5 (yes 3/5) of my last rentals were unplayable, usually in the last scenes of the movies, and 1/5 they sent me was the wrong movie! I'm going to try cafe DVD soon and hopefully they'll be like the old netflix. I don't know how you got a late fee, in the days of the old netflix, I routinely sent back movies after two weeks and never got a late fee, the worst they did was Email me to see if they were sent yet (Of course they were!)! I'm amazed at home many movies some of you watch! I consider myself a HT fanatic, and I watch less than many! Fortunately drinking, music and sex keep me from watching to mucH TV!!
Yes, that is fortunate for you, heh heh. Thanks very much, I'll try this CafeDVD, hope they're good!
CafeDVD's prices are cheaper than anywhere, and no mandatory $16 a month mafioso hogwash. I've just rented 4, more later....
