When to use low pass filter?

As a companion thread to my earlier message, I have set the low pass filter on the Onix R-DES at 120hz, but perhaps I should lower it to 80hz. Does anyone have suggestions? I mainly use my living room to watch movies, and music is only a mild secondary concern.

Depends on the low freq response of your speakers...80hz is used "more often than not" in surround sound systems I would guess. Of course if you have very small speakers...you may need to stick with the higher x-over setting.

So if I can play my stereo and center channel to 80 hz, then I can probably set a low pass filter on the sub for 80hz? How much LFE information is there usually between 80-120 hz?

Lots. But I'd be surprised if your front speakers couldn;t cope with it acceptably at least.
