and,
Beethoven - "Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major" Rudolph Serkin/Ozawa/BSO

@bslon   Thx. War is difficult to categorize, a little Santana/Tower of Power and some of the song writing ability of Stevie Wonder.  FWIW Acoustic Sounds will be reissuing the first 5 Bad Company recordings on 45 rpm vinyl.

Chopin-Chopin By Starlight(SP 8371) Side 1

Eurythmics-Sweet Dreams(are made of this) Side B SQ*

Another diverse vinyl night. Played 2 of my M- Goodwill finds... Chopin was decent but Mathis just OK. Cycles what a great "comeback" album. Many 70's "Classic Rock" artists had strong albums that year(89). SQ* Sweet Dreams might have Audiophile SQ but would need another spin. Very tough 3 way SQ tonight but Touchdown edges out Vandross/War.

A slightly condensed Sunday night session, blame the NFL. Very difficult to select a SQ winner on the next day but the edge goes to Ford/Campbell for a very natural sounding recording. No, the Debbie Boone recording is not as bad as perceived but will NOT be making any of my Top 100 lists.

FWIW the power quality was lacking tonight. Usually Sunday evening is #1 in SQ but dynamics were restrained tonight. Nothing had below average SQ but was disappointed in "Opera" since its an original pressing maybe on a better power night? Wrapping up Gord's tribute with 2 or 3 albums to go.

After cable switching/rotating my system SQ is vastly improving. Tough call between Scott/Janacek. Despite being slightly aggressive in SQ this overlooked jazz/fusion gem(Street Beat) takes the SQ crown. Another very solid Anne Murray recording that goes unnoticed by too many. "This Time Baby" one of the best disco singles!

Only unplayed album tonight was Marshall Tucker which also had the worst SQ. Probably due to being a later pressing. Luther and Neil had near Audiophile SQ but after switching around all cables its a tougher call, by Friday I will lock in my best SQ. Quixote could be Gord's best. David/Shelly a dollar bin gem.

Billy Joel-Turnstiles(MoFi Gain 2 No. 1121) Side 2 SQ*

Repositioned my speakers and rotated IC's/Powercords which created a noticeable SQ change. The only recording that was just average in SQ was Skynyrd might not be an OG pressing. SQ* Joel was tough to analyze maybe due to cable changes but my guess is an original pressing has better SQ. I'm sure some don't want/need/hear another version of Take Five but a 16 minute live version could be of interest.

Mahler-Symphony NO.2 (Solti/LSO CSA 2217) Side 1 SQ Audiophile

Slowly going thru my last 150+ unplayed albums condition and content will be the issue for many of these albums. Bookends played at Audiophile SQ, not bad for VG vinyl. SQ* would need a 2nd play to determine Audiophile SQ. Harry James was the only recording with subpar SQ. Mahler takes the SQ crown due to the excellent clarity and dynamics from this London box set.

@ticat Thx. During the next several weeks I will be revisting Gord’s 1970’s recordings. Of his 8 70’s studio recordings I might be only missing one. When considering 1970’s singer/songwriters he’s right up there with Paul Simon and Harry Chapin.

Tough call between Allyson/Schuur but I will give the edge to Schuur a $10 album defeating a $100+ Audiophile recording(lol). Played both sides of Sundown in tribute to Gordon Lightfoot.

@bslon   +1  Night Owl what a great overlooked album. With over 2 million in US sales its collecting dust in a lot of record collections. Both City To City and Night Owl are Top 100 "Classic Rock" recordings of the 1970's.

Every recording had above average SQ but only Larry Vuckovich had Audiophile SQ along with superb 5* content.

@bslon At that time 1977/8 I was still a kid in middle school listening to Top 40 radio. It was one of a few albums that my older sister and myself both had. It wasn’t until I heard Foghat-Live, Double Live Gonzo ect. when my taste in music changed. FWIW I prefer the smoothness of "Night Fever" over "Stayin’ Alive".

Since I have hit the 3 year mark of playing 1 side of every vinyl record in my collection about 150+ albums are left. About 50 are classical/baroque/organ in VG/VG+ condition all thrift store finds including another 50+ Broadway/movie scores/50’, 60’s pop that await a stylus drop. Another 15 box classical/opera sets which I have played at least half. That leaves the miscellaneous and about a dozen sealed albums. In summary it shows how long it takes to play every record even in a mid-sized collection(1800-2000). Now the difficult part deciding what goes and how many multiple copies are kept.

4/8 with Audiophile SQ makes for an enjoyable listening session. Giuffria(Grundman) and Renaissance were average at best. Tough call between Zuckerman/Muribus and ELP for the SQ crown. I will award the crown to ELP(1st pressing) for the great bass SQ on a rock recording.

I waited 1 week after Axpona for any playback on my system which was a good cleansing. Nothing sounded below average but the stereo version of Earl Bostic sounded equally mono. Would need to hear Peter Case again to verify possible Audiophile SQ. Foster takes the SQ crown despite sounding more like a CD then vinyl. IMO the content rises above the SQ. Northern Lights what a great song!

Played 4 "Live" recordings none had Audiophile SQ but REO was closest. Ms. Murray was very close to Audiophile SQ with excellent content from one of the most currently overlooked artists from the 70’s/80’s. The bass on Humble Pie was excellent despite the recording being to closed in. Mackay & Bell is a great $10 jazz album with Audiophile SQ!

Only "Rainbow" had Subpar SQ. Would have to play Metheny/Schubert several times to declare a SQ winner. Metheny had that slight digital edge and Schubert had a slight veil common with 2 eye vs. 6 eye Columbia recordings. Nearing 3 years of my "play all my vinyl project" while trying to avoid repeats. I have added close to 400 albums in this 3 year period and will give a detailed update shortly.

If anyone appreciates high level musicianship and Audiophile SQ this recording might interest you. A very strong BS&T album released on ABC records with half speed mastering by Stan Ricker. Yes, Krokus had very solid SQ for a "live" pop/metal recording.

My only vinyl Dylan recording was a solid repress paid $5 at an estate sale. Lacy a very overlooked 80’s progressive country artist with a very strong 1989 release.

Tony Bennett and Tull had average SQ at best. Tull was a late 1970’s gatefold pressing without barcode. Renee Rosnes(2018) takes the SQ crown with the help of Kevin Gray. IMO one of the best recordings of new material in the past 5 years. If you want only 1 Warrick recording consider this live album.. The Koln concert is outstanding no need for my opinion. Kyung-Wha Chung plays with a great balance of technique and feel.

@vonhelmholtz    Appreciate your mature response. Was not criticizing your choice of music since I am of fan of extreme metal which many here think its noise? They might be right since most extreme metal is poorly recorded. IMO Classical/Baroque Jazz and Classic Rock has a much wider range of diversion then current pop music.

@vonhelmholtz    Gave Bibi a quick VT listen it's the same regurgitated current dance/pop in a different wrapper.

Thx for the info! Considering a vinyl version of Kind Of Blue since the 1997 remastered CD is the only version in my collection.

Sunday evening power quality was not up to its usual standards. Might be related to a 36hr power outage in my area late last week. Very difficult to pick the worst SQ but was very disappointed in the noisy vinyl of my new/sealed Moorer LP when compared to a plethora of surface scratches on my yard sale find Zep 2 The latest Megadeth SQ was ok but nothing special. The content is solid but not up to the level of 2009's End Game. Metheny takes the SQ crown despite the very holographic sound of an excellent Warwick recording.

@noromance   +1 Have both the US Dunhill/ ABC block rainbow label and the pink UK Probe label which includes the seven playing cards. Have not played back-to-back determining which pressing has better SQ. FWIW "Seven Separate Fools" easily makes my Top 100 Pop/Rock albums of the 1970's.

Played Last night 2/14/23.

When playing jazz vocals you expect Audiophile SQ. With the 8 recordings I selected(2 Japanese pressings) I was not disappointed due to 6/8 reaching Audiophile status. Since Linda Lawson was a 1960 pressing and Connick Jr. 1988 both had slight issues common with each recording era. The SQ crown goes to Dick Haymes(Audiophile AP-200)maybe it was the calmness/flow of the music that gave it the edge over Marlena Shaw. Both IMO are demo level recordings.

Wow! 5/8 Audiophile SQ recordings tonight. Unfortunately 4 recordings just slipped in. Trio 77 was clearly a notch above the other 4. Not quite a demo level Lp due to being slightly forward in presentation. If you are an acoustic jazz fan this recording is a 9+/10 SQ and content. TLC could be Ms. Wilson’s 1960’s best? Felt like an all jazz playlist today. Just finished playing prior to Super Bowl Halftime.
